ETA: Doesn't look as bad as the Rita damage.

New camps reinforced with steel kept their structure. Storm surge wasn’t as high with the eye passing slightly East of HB, so most of the camps “survived”

That being said, wind damage was catastrophic and the camps that did survive have roofs, walls, doors, windows compromised.

Anything that was at ground level when it hit is either destroyed or gone.

All that being said, it looks a lot better than 15 years ago when Rita went through. I think if Laura had actually passed slightly to the west of HB, things would be much different.

I’d say the structures did better than they did for H. Rita.

It's interesting how our knowledge of hurricanes have evolved, to where "just to the east of landfall" is now known to be a worse place than the "direct hit".

Maybe in the future, the NHC needs to accommodate that, to somehow show that "just to the east of the line" is worse than the line.

One thing that probably helped Holly Beach is that it was more in the western eyewall, meaning the winds weren’t blowing straight on shore. Probably saved them from worse surge, which is the opposite of what happened there with Rita.

May some were constructed better?

From what I saw online some friends posted it looked rough. If there was one bright spot the surge was not as feared.

If there is a bright side, there doesn't appear to be too much damage to the outside facades so these people will basically get to redo their interiors and they'll come out looking brand new. They'll probably get new roofs and A/C units as well. The value of their property should therefore go up. Of course, that's assuming that they had insurance.

Well undoubtedly. Better code and I’m sure built higher. I certainly wouldn’t call what I see in the pics and video “devastation”.

This storm was bad, and it did a lot of damage and caused a ton of destruction, but I think Lake Charles and the area got lucky. A bad storm surge on top of all the wind damage would have been absolutely devastating
