So while the term "The science is settled" might be political rhetoric these days, there are times when it does apply.

exactly. they're trying to put 'we know exactly what the temperature will be in Topeka Kansas on this day in fifty years' on par with the Law of Gravity so nobody is allowed to continue to research it.

its religion for them.

again YOU brought that "trust the science' quote up. quit hijacking the thread and then replying to your own little zinger that NOBODY said in this thread but you.

You trusted the science when they told you the vaxxx stopped the spread didn’t you? And that conservatives were a danger to other people because they didn’t want to get it

I certainly didn't get vaxxed. I trusted my immune system to take care of covid and then built up my natural immunity through getting it 2 or 3 times (can't be sure cuz i never took a covid test after the first).

I probably spread it but if people wanted to hang out and drink it seemed they were making the same choice I was.

It is crazy how the politicians gaslit conservatives into a war on science.

You should have listened to the economists instead. The Science fricked up the economy and people still died.

"Science' knows shite about economics, yet you trusted them that they knew what they were doing.

I think Trump listened to economists, infectious disease experts, and experts in other fields before he decided to shut down the whole country for 2 weeks.

It was also pretty clear after about a week and a half that there was no putting the genie back in the bottle and we should get everyone back to work that wasn't elderly/immuno-compromised.

"I was today's years old when I learned..."

"I didn't have XYZ on my 2024 bingo card"

Anyone who says either of these in person near me will make me fart right by their desk/office/face if they do so.

THE SCIENCE IS SETTLED

It IS stupid because, in those cases where the science IS settled, no one who is serious would bother questioning it. So why would anyone who is serious ever use the phrase?

It's like saying "water is wet", or "it's gonna get cold in the Midwest this winter", there's no point to it, we all know it.

If serious people question it, then it isn't settled, so they would not say it is. There just is no room in serious conversation for the phrase " THE SCIENCE IS SETTLED".

Science, BY IT’S VERY DEFINITION, is NEVER “settled”. It’s a continuous and ongoing quest for knowledge.

Sure, but it's a matter of degrees. Is anyone really seriously questioning things like Newton's laws of motion? Sure, we can extend the knowledge into Quantum Mechanics, but I think the basics of stuff like inertia, for all practical purposes, can be considered 'settled'.

So like I said, since it is settled, there's no need to point it out as 'settled'. It just is accepted.

If I say "The sun rose in the East this morning", is there any reason to question it? No, so nobody does.

The science is settled!
There’s a coming ice age and we’ll all have to migrate to the equator.

I think that's part of the point of this thread and why it's a stupid phrase. The only time the phrase is ever said is with regard to topics where the science is far from settled. It's an entirely political thing and at times it should be some type of ethical violation.
