Has anyone here taken Proscar, (Finasteride) for BPH?

I'm looking at the side effects and wondering are they temporary or permanent?
The more common side effects that can occur with Finasteride include:
decreased sex drive
trouble getting or keeping an erection
ejaculation disorder
increase in breast size and tenderness
skin rash
Anybody using something that works without all the side effects?

I never used Proscar, but was on Flomax for a couple of years and experienced those side effects. My doctor switched me to Dutasteride (Avodart) and I no longer have those issues.

Thanks, I'll talk to my doctor about it. It looks like all the hormone blockers have the same effect: impotence.

Id rather be bald than not have a sex drive.
But anyway i think it depends on the person, Avodart's side effects are decreased sex drive, testicle pain or swelling, increased breast size or tenderness.

Yeah. No side effects. And my PSA went down by about half.

That's certainly the case with Flomax. Stay away from that stuff.

Tamsulosin = Flomax. Flomax makes you pee better if you have a grapefruit sized prostate. But it has side effects. I'm no longer on it. Finasteride reduces the size of the prostate. I'm still on that. Dutasteride was prescribed but my pharama plan would not approve. Hence Finasteride. So yeah these are commonly prescribed for BPH. And they do different things. I'm surprised you are on one and not the other. I now take Doxasozin instead of Flomax.

I'm not on anything yet but was just prescribed Proscar. I've heard that the impotence doesn't go away even after discontinuing medication.

The medicine has been linked to suicide so please beware if you are taking it.

I took Finasteride for several years. Had a few side effects but I stopped taking it after having prostate reduction surgery. Basically - I suspect that I started too late for the Finasteride to reduce the size of my prostate.
On the other hand - the surgery has improved things. I only have to get up once or twice a night, instead of almost every hour.

I’ve had BPH since my 20’s. No prescription medication ever helped. The only thing that ever worked was a particular OTC saw palmetto formulation. The one I use now is called Urinozinc and it’s at Walmart. Works great for me.

No problems here with Finasteride. Ask for the 5mg and break it in half.
