Even today there are provisions on the International Space Station for using Morse code as a last resort for communication when everything else has failed.

When i was like 10, I once made a small telegraph out of a block of wood, nail, metal tab, battery, and magnet at a boy scout camp.
It spurned my social studies fair project on ole Samuel Finley Breese Morse (i cant remember the names of people i come into contact with on a daily basis but god damnit if ill never forget all 4 names of Sammy boy.)

My grandmother (no pics) learned morse code during World War II. Fifty years after the war was over she still remembered it. I'd give her a sentence and she would tap it out on the table. I thought she was cool for knowing it.
She was a civilian working for Pacific T&T, but was contracted by the Army for communications. She may have been one of the first civilians in the continental U.S. to know that the Japanese had accepted the Potsdam Declaration and surrendered.
