mask only when required. no tats, neck or otherwise. no hair. not by choice. white goatee, cause i'm old.

government street works for me because i only have to cross 2.5 lane with my walker.

It is supposed to drive traffic to the businesses on the street. Now no one wants to take it to and those businesses will die faster

They did a road diet on Madison Avenue in Memphis when we lived there. It transformed the area for the better, and pretty quickly....about 2-3 years.

IMO street parking is more critical than bike lanes.

If no one is taking Government Street then wouldn't it be less traffic and thus a more pleasant experience?

I live on one of those side streets and I have no problems turning left or right from a side street onto Government. If turning left just pull out into the turning lane and wait for an opening.

For people like me who live and shop there the change is great. People driving through at 5pm aren't financially supporting that area so who cares how they feel about it.

No doubt making a left out of a side street is now much easier

i learned a few years ago to not try to turn left onto Government. if i'm going downtown, i take capital heights ever so slowly to acadian, then turn right. if i'm only going to be on government a few blocks, i take capital heights ever so slowly to 1 or 2 blocks past my destination or turn, go to Government and turn right. crossing 2 lanes (now 1) is much easier than crossing 4 (now 3)

None of whom ever use Government Street, certainly not on a bike. It’s the same ones always jumping in to defend the need to spend a gazillion tax dollars on CATS when they wouldn’t know how to board one of those empty buses if they had to.

I agree. I think a committee had visited Austin a few years ago and decided on this setup.

Red Stick Reads behind the Domino's pizza on Government St.

It's small, but they can order what you want. It's family owned and people are really nice. Helped my kids find books they were interested in.

Rode my bike there from downtown.

there are 900 households in capital heights alone that can support many businesses, and will if it is safe and pleasant. no one wants to bar hop on sidewalks next to 4 lanes of traffic going 40+ and jockeying for position.

I made this comment on a food board post recently and got crucified about it, but I completely agree with you. The road diet might be the stupidest idea Baton Rouge has had, and that's saying a lot given all the bad ideas this city comes up it.

I used to live in that area and a lot of the ideas to do this arguably fricked things up worse IMHO.

Making Capitol Heights one way meant that going to anything at Jefferson and Government required taking Claycut or Government, both of which are problems.

Changing the composition of Government St may dissuade people from other parts of town from driving there but it continues to frick people who live there who can’t access alternate routes easily.

“Why not take Florida?” Because I lived on the other side of Government from it and the easiest way to get there was to go through BRCC then flip a U into traffic.

So we spent over 10 million dollars to shrink a state Highway into a two lane road to help bar hopping and bar owners? Now it makes sense. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
