A mechanic friend who has been working on VW’s for 45 years said this whole electrification thing from VW is to get ahead of a looming issue. Says their gas engines are absolute garbage (diesels are ok), and he’s betting on a huge recall coming. Expects VW will hand out big rebates if you trade in the gas auto for an EV.

Pretty much every manufacturer's gas engines are garbage now.
They threw away reliability in favor of hanging turbos on everything, making everything on and in the engine that they possibly could out of aluminum and plastic to reduce weight, then telling everyone to go 10-15k miles between oil changes on a fricking turbocharged engine. That is a recipe for disaster and we are starting to see it happen.

My brother bought one of the diesels they had to buy back from people for cheap, barely any miles.

I’m skeptical of your friend. I had a 2015 diesel Passat. Probably the best car I’ve had. Sold it back to VW and got a gas Passat that runs great.
