We were using the oil to get him free but it took too long and his face was stuck to the trap and he drowned before we could free him

Is oil a known best practice to free a mouse from a sticky trap? I think once they are stuck it's impossible to get them unstuck without causing serious bodily harm.

I did it before with my daughter’s rat that was stuck in her car for weeks. We got him with the sticky trap and freed him with oil.
I think it didn’t help that we were doing it outside in the dark with no running water.
