re: GLP-1 Drugs Can Be Used First for Weight Loss Says American College of Cardiology

I understand why Mingo is mad though - his lower BMI is the one thing he has going for him and now a once a week shot is eroding the only decent quality he’s ever had in life.

These medications are like $1400 a month.
It clearly doesn’t cost that much to make. Also there are competing companies with somewhat comparable drugs which will drive the price down over time.
I am sure health insurance companies are going to look at the overall savings of a negotiated shot cost vs long term cost of being massively over weight.

I *think* you have to be careful to stay on top of your proteins or else your muscles waste away as quick or quicker than your chub. As "easy" as a once weekly shot is, it is still difficult to pull it off well and healthfully.
This is accurate. The drug regulates blood sugar, so the ebbs and flows of blood sugar that causes some to over eat or eat highly sugary or processed foods are regulated almost completely eliminating cravings.
It also slows the digestion of food so the feeling of satiation stays longer.
My doctor said to get the daily recommended lean protein or I’ll end up looking like those creepy skeleton people you see in Hollywood now. Because when your body needs energy, it’ll pull from lean muscle as easily as fat stores.
The real lifestyle change for me is that I want the drug to work but I’m committed to not being on it for life - so I’m taking advantage of being less hungry by eating smaller meals with better macronutrients. I’ve also added many more fresh fruits and vegetables to my daily intake and I’m also able to occasionally fast for 24-36 hours with little to no discomfort.
It’s been a wild change in my life and as someone who’s lost weight many times in many ways over the past 35 years - this is the most incredible medical intervention I’ve ever experienced.
But I get that it’s a hard sell for people who either don’t struggle with weight or have busted their asses to lose and keep off weight and I don’t judge those people for that opinion. It’s not for everyone. But it’s incredible.

I honestly don’t give a shite at this point. We should just cull the herd and becoming more dependent on pharmaceuticals may accomplish that.
I’ll keep being personally responsible and maintain my physical and mental health while you idiots stay sick and feel like shite. Whatever

You don’t understand the resistance to MORE dependency on pharmaceuticals?
I do.
I weigh that with the absolute shite quality of life obese people have... between bad and worse, I'd pick just bad every day of the week.
Not everyone HAS the time, money or access to regular exercise... and it's too effin hot to go full tard outdoors right now.
Inside the home? Sure... some people are too heavy or out of shape to have the energy for it after work.
Staying fit is easy enough... GETTING fit is fricking hard and I don't begrudge those who need a kickstart.

Quit being obese then, extremely simple

bullshite. Just total bullshite. The average American spends over 3 hours a day of screen time on their smart phone

Maybe not, but you’re like a moth to a flame in these threads every time. Keep up that mental health though.

First, I wish you well and am happy to see that there ARE those who are committed to real change... supposedly you are a unicorn- but I'd bet my day's food there are a LOT like you!
Second... your post is awesome and I appreciate the facts and personal perspective you've put into it.
Third... you are mighty gracious to the naysayers- I'd be a bit more salty, myself!

I once had an exasperating argument with someone claiming that they couldn't lose weight
I said eat less exercise more
Her response: that doesn't work for me because (thyroid, diabetes, whatever I forgot)
I said, no, it is just a bit harder
She was determined. I tried all that, I just gain weight
Finally I asked her if she was magic
"No. What the f- "
"but your body can create mass out of nothing?"
"I didn't say that"
"You said that reducing calories in and burning more calories ends with you gaining weight"
"Right. . ."
Well if you are doing those things, where are you getting the mass to gain? You must be magic. Did you piss of a leprechaun or something"
"a-hole."

Mingo... I'm a short timer, account wise but a long enough site lurker to know your shtick. Honestly, I felt the same way my first 39 years of life that I was lean, fit and a gym rat.
Time and circumstance have softened my views and opinions on lardasses- now that I'm chonky myself.
You oughta hope time nor circumstance catch up to you... it's mighty humbling.

That’s a you problem. You slacked and the results are the results. Is that harsh? I guess but that’s the reality of the situation.
I didn’t do my dishes tonight, I left them in the sink. I wasn’t “too busy” or “too tired” to do them, I just didn’t fricking do it. Extremely simple concept

The fact GLP-1s piss off the OT so much is hilarious.
You woulda thought I told people their Mother was a whore

Yea that’s just not how it works. Most just can’t figure out (or don’t want to) what works for their body. Everyone is different and our bodies respond to nutrients and exercise in different ways. Gotta figure out what works for your goals. But back to the topic…pharma is a crutch and cop out in the end.

Yea that’s just not how it works.
But if you are burning more than you are taking in, you will 100% lose weight
Every time, all the time
It is impossible to conceive a different outcome without accounting for magic being real
Because people can be vastly different, but physics is physics

And when they stop eating crap... the weight doesn't always just melt off.
I was slim, trim and fit all my life until I hit 39... between covid crap and a health change.., AND shitty eating and snacking habits, I packed on an absurd amount of pounds in about a 9mo frame.
I quit eating shitty and maintained that weight... dieted and lost about 15lbs. Could not drop more, hit a plateau... got slack and put on 5 that I lost. I'm back to some fairly restrictive dieting and having a really hard time dropping weight. It sucks.
I'm not on the shot.. actually scared of it. If I can't get somewhere with my dieting in the next few months I may consider it.

So pretty much what you’re saying is when you did what you were supposed to do it worked, and when you didn’t, it didn’t. Makes perfect sense to me
