Former Jazz Fest board presidents not happy

Former Jazz Fest board presidents seek return of free tickets and other perks. Not linking to NOLA.com but you can Google the story.
Seems as though former presidents of the non-profit got 70 free tickets for life and rights to buy another 100 at half price. Plus free parking and 4 special access tickets.
Gravy train stopped two years ago but upcoming event in 2022 is first time that these past presidents won't get their free stuff. Of course, they've filed suit.

What does the contract say?

Man, thoughts and prayers to them in this difficult time for them. I can only imagine how tough that must be.

If Corps can change you retirement package, this can be stopped. Period.

How much do they make selling them on the secondary market?

Apparently the bylaws were amended after 2019 to keep 501c3 status and to stay in line with best practices for nonprofits.
Now they'll have to pony up and buy tickets like the rest of us poor folks.
One is a former judge and past candidate for mayor of the Chocolate City. Not sure about the other one.

Don’t you have some kids to offer up to Moloch, groomer?

Second person is currently director of district offices for Congressman Troy Carter.
Original suit by the two past presidents was filed "under wraps" so as not to get bad publicity. Response in court documents by the JF Foundation were filed as public court documents so the details are all public now.
And yes, I'm sure that they were able to sell all those tickets on the secondary market.

70 free and 100 half off? Sound like some of them had planned the sale of their allotted tickets into their budgets this year expecting to get them.

How anything in NO manages to stay solvent is remarkable. Like everything in town, there's eventually so many hands in the pot that it's bound to collapse. Water is wet. Welcome to New Orleans.

3 day pass is $225, 4 day pass is $275, if thats what they were getting for free thats $500, per ticket. 70 of them free is $35,000. 100 at half price is $25,000. Jazz Fest is potentially saving $60,000 per past president by cutting out this perk.

"Past board presidents also reportedly received four laminated badges that granted access to reserved viewing areas in the wings of Jazz Fest’s three largest stages"
Sounds like those VIP packages that they sell. Those are similar to Big Chief passes which retail for about $3,300 and you get free parking.

I love how these two clowns filed it under wraps because they knew this was shady AF, and the foundation was like... ok... we gonna expose you and file our responses NOT under seal.
Of course in typical crappy NOla.com reporting they leave out if these past presidents are employees or receive some wage compensation.
I'd imagine given the value of all those passes and reduced cost passes... there is no way the IRS would consider that de minimis.
And if they were selling those tickets...
IRS just got a few new audit cases.

4 passes per former board president sounds reasonable even if they are VIP (and non-transferable). At a glance, these appear to be volunteer board spots.
70+100 is laughable.

I think the 4 VIP passes are reasonable as well.
But they kept getting these even after their two year terms as foundation president was over. Free stuff for life!
Great job if you can get it.

If they 70/100 is what they agreed on, I wonder what the original request was for

How does one become president?
Posted on 4/12/22 at 10:27 am to StringMusic
Seems like possible ethics violations if some of these are local government employees.

There is a very SMALL chance that out of 170 (free/discounted) tickets, ALL were being used by said individual for friends/family. They were absolutely selling some or all. After all said and done, it would make for a very nice payday!
And I agree with the others, 4 VIP non-transferable, per person would be very fair. And maybe a few others for half price, but not those numbers that they had access to before...
