For the religious folks, honest questions...

I grew up Catholic, many elder and younger family members are dedicated and hardcore. I have all the Catholic guilt.

For me, as more of an intellectual type, I don't know how I fit. I have really interesting conversations because I do struggle with religion in general.

To my questions, please allow:

1. Is it full Faith and Belief?
2. How do other religions impact your thoughts?
3. What's the dividing line between politics and your religion (or are they the same?)

I promise I'm just asking and curious.

Stopped here and I already hate you. And not because I’m on the side of religion.

The people that are 100% sure there isn't a God are just as foolish as the people that 100% know their God is the right God.

If you really "believe" in your religion, there is no dividing line.

Your religion would come before anything or anyone.

That's one of the common themes of any religion, 100% dedication.

I don’t know what you mean by this. I don’t believe in everything the Catholic religion teaches, if that’s what you’re asking. No religion should be adhered to strictly and literally, though. Catholicism is no different in my opinion. They all have a few extreme views.

2. How do other religions impact your thoughts?

My grandmother was Catholic, my other grandmother was Pentecostal, I grew up in a non/denominational household, and I converted to Catholicism at age 35. I have been shaped by my upbringing and that’s my upbringing.

I don’t like the two to overlap. My religion should be my religion. Granted, my politics are shaped and centered around my morals then shaded by logic as I see things. It’s a blend of the two but when it comes to my religious beliefs, I don’t let politics get in the way. I believe in helping and feeding the poor but that doesn’t mean I vote for candidates who want to raise my taxes or spend my existing tax money on perpetually safety netting those who refuse to help themselves. I believe that all life is precious but I don’t believe it starts until there’s a heartbeat (instead of at conception) and I damn sure believe there are times when abortion is acceptable though not after a heartbeat and not just because the parents don’t want it.

I’m religious and try to live the Catholic way but only to the extent that I see logically fit. I’m not gonna go about the rest of my life never spouting off a few million knuckle babies or splooging inside my wife just because my religion believes masturbation and pulling out are murder.

I truly appreciate this response, but this is the one that confuses me. I'll shut-up soon.

I did not grow up with Catholicism being my choice. I was baptized, confirmed, etc before I had my own real measure of what it means.

I didn't get to pick and choose what I accept and don't. Is that how it is now?

1. Not sure exactly what you’re asking. Do I have full faith and belief that there is a God and he had a son named Jesus? Yes. Do I blindly follow the Catholic Church? No.

2. Minimally. It also depends on which other churches. Other apostolic founded churches more so, Protestant churches much less.

I answer to God, not the Catholic Church. I can choose what I believe or don’t from the Church. The Church may be the leader of the faith and “closer to God”, but they are human and therefore not infallible - we’ve proven that throughout history

Nothing wrong with other religions. Believe what you want. Good people will go to Heaven even if they don’t know God IMO

Politics and religion are closer than you think. Morals and ethics underline both

This was closer to my thoughts overall. I'm not here to tell people how to think. I struggle with this and trying to help myself - 100%.

Do you believe this as a Christian?

If someone is agnostic, or atheist, or muslim, or buddhist, etc. Good people go to Heaven? In your view?

I promise you and all of TD, I'm just asking.

Give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish. Nothing wrong with giving someone your thoughts and opinion in a respectful way if it can lead them down a better path. And as far as voting, you just have to vote for what you believe in, it’s the world we live in

Yes I believe that whole heartedly and I think many Catholics do. Why would God deny someone Heaven if they never heard his name, but they lived a good life and treated everyone with respect and practiced good morals?

And my God isnt vengeful or petty enough to say “well you’re Buddhist. Even though you practiced that faith perfectly and your record of good deeds is spotless, I won’t let you into heaven bc you didn’t worship me.” That idea is particularly petty in my mind but many people subscribe to it of all religions. It’s not about personal praise for God like getting him to like to you get into Heaven. It’s about being worthy in your heart and your actions. People try to convert others to different religions, but fact is the majority of the world is worshipping the same God, even Muslims have the same God, they just don’t recognize Jesus. A Catholic and a Baptist practice 98% of the same religion, and the differences aren’t meaningful in the grand scheme
