Why is it not lazy to ignore your child in this way but it is lazy to give them a tablet?

I do.

I also, at times, will allow them more than their alloted 30 minutes of screen time.

Why do people think that if their kids play on tablets sometimes that they also don't play outside or with toys?

You're right. Your parents never, ever put on cartoons for you to keep you entertained while they needed to do a few things around the house.
I grew up with like 3 TV channels, cartoons were on in the morning for a bit (an hour at most), and that's pretty much it.

Tablets or TV aren't the worst thing ever, but creating a dependency for young children on them could be

But it's crazy that 2 and 3 year olds have to have a phone or tablet in front of them to calm them down.

Not all kids that have tablets fall into this category though. Awful lot of absolutes being thrown around in this thread.

I used to think this, then I had kids.

We are pretty strict at home for screen time, and with the Amazon tablet he has limited time he can play games even if he has a day we let him play a lot.

When we go to a restaurant though, he gets his tablet as long as we are there. I don’t care what your judging arse thinks, it makes my life easier and I want to enjoy my meal and time out.

boomer parents love to judge millennial parents but completely forget that their kids spent their entire summers playing N64

exactly. And assholes calling people lazy have no clue what goes on other times of the day so they shouldnt judge.

for example, i have my 3 boys and i literly have to get atleast one of them to some kind of practice every night of the week right now. My wife opened a business so she is working insane hours so i am essentially a single parent right now.

You may see my 5 year old with a tablet, but i may be watching one practice while helping the other with homework. how the frick is that lazy?

we may be at a restruant and 5 year old may be on the tablet, but its because i may have spent last 2 hours with him while the others practiced or did homework and I would like to visit with the older two now.

people judge way too much.

Both are lazy and i’ve done both. Not a tablet but tv. I have no problem with being lazy or with tablets though. What i do see is parents being too scared to tell their kids no or not entertain them 24/7. I see that a lot and that is worse to me than whatever particular entertainment they use.

Same was said about TVs 35-40 years ago. I think plenty of kids have tablets and also have parents that are very active in their lives and keep them balanced.

Right, and I don't agree that all kids who have access to a tablet fall into this category. But there is a segment of the population that basically use technology as a babysitter, and create a technology addiction in really young kids.

A road trip is a different animal than using a tablet as a babysitter while at home

OP did not specify, and my only personal experience with giving kids tablets is on road trips. My kids only want to be outside when they're at home, but I can see where others might use them more and it doesn't bother me. We haven't yet introduced tablets to our kids in the house, but I see that time coming and I'm okay with it. They're ubiquitous in the world and I can see pros and cons to young kids using them. As a parent, it is my duty to make sure they use them more for the pros and not the cons.

TV was supposed to rot my brain. Video games were supposed to make me lazy and destroy my attention span. I'm a functional adult despite my technology usage as a child. Macintosh games in the late 80's taught me to read and type.

And video games 30 years ago.

From the arcade panic to the home console panic to the gameboy panic to pokemon being satanic to gta causing real life crime.

Boomers boom.

Wife got super pissed at me once because we had family in town and were going to go out to eat. But before we left the family wanted us to call the restaurant to see if they had wifi. No wifi meant their kids couldn't use their tablets. I told them there was absolutely zero chance I was going to make those calls and they could all go out themselves. Piss on that.

shitty parents have always been shitty parents

even if you took the tablets away, those parents would still be shitty parents

Not sure why you're being argumentative. I didn't say or imply that any access to tablets is bad, just that using technology as a babysitter is bad, doesn't seem like we disagree on that front

Shitty parents come in all shapes and sizes, and use all sorts of different things to be shitty at parenting.

The premise of this thread is lazy

I mean, how do you know what other parents are doing 24/7?

Either this:

A. Never happened.

or

B. You're a complete a-hole who ruined a potentially good night with your family and extended family over some misconceived notion that tablets are evil and you couldn't inconvenience yourself for 5 minutes to make that sacrifice.

I wouldn't flex about that.
