ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — Electric cars have become quite popular lately. And with gas prices and inflation, it seems like a great way to help the environment and save money in the long term.

But... what happens when the battery needs replacing? And what happens when the replacement battery costs more than the car itself? For a St. Petersburg family, that is the exact position they found themselves in.

Avery Siwinski who is 17 years old was excited to get a car to drive herself to and from school. Her parents spent $11,000 on a used electric car for her. It's a Ford Focus Electric. The car is a 2014 model, with 60,000 miles.

"It was fine at first," Avery Siwinski said. "I loved it so much. It was small and quiet and cute. And all the sudden it stopped working."

Avery Siwinski had her car for six months before her dashboard started to light up with problematic symbols.

"In March, it started giving an alert," she said. "And then we took it to the shop and it stopped running."

In the midst of the car troubles, the family was dealing with tragedy. In June, Avery's father died following a stage four colon cancer diagnosis. Her grandfather, Ray Siwinski stepped in to try to get the car issues sorted.

"Turns out, this is a pretty common problem for this particular car," Ray Siwinski said.

The car has sat at Ford Auto Nation in Pinellas County for the last few months. Ray said he was able to get a quote on a replacement battery for the electric car.
quote:

"The Ford dealership had advised us that we could replace the battery," he said. "It would only cost $14,000." $3,000 more than what the family bought the car for. And that quote didn't include installation and labor costs, Ray Siwinski said.
quote:

Ray shared that Auto Nation offered to buy the car off him, offering him $500 for it.
So this is the big plan , huh Joe?

There's a niche car battery repair industry that's starting to grow.

I'm willing to bet that battery could be repaired for a fraction of the replacement cost. Customer simply doesn't know those shops exist.

This has been a known problem for a while.

I want to say a Tesla replacement is $15-20k.

It’s an ongoing problem and ignored by the current activists.

I hope something cheaper is an option and innovation continues but there’s going to be some angry people and people leaving the EV market in a few years if car makers don’t find something more sustainable.

Who didn't know this would happen when those batteries get 5-10 years old, lol.

Here's a tip. Take your gas money savings, and put it in a fund for future battery replacement.

Of course that is the end game on these electric cars. They are no different than your cell phone, cordless drills, or the fat max you buy and won't hold a charge 2 years later. Except this time, it's an expensive car that no one has 15 grand in one pop to keep your car running.

The battery life/charging time/grid chaos element of electric cars alone show that we are years away, possibly decades from being truly ready to have electric cars as more than a novelty.

Yeah, I figured at this point, it was well known that batteries don't last. 7 years is about where they are then they just aren't cost effective to replace. Don't buy a used electric car until repair becomes more commonplace or replacement more cost effective.

I’m in the market for a model Y for my wife in the next few years and a used one with 40k miles is the same cost as a brand new one. Absolutely stupid.

so, in other words, you ultimately save nothing.

Idealists ramming their dream world down everyone’s throat without the infrastructure to support it. So much in our world today can be summed up with this mindset. Big ideas with little to no plan. But hey, as long as it makes people feel good about themselves like they're doing something. That’s all that matters right?

And you should especially avoid an almost 10 year old model that has since been discontinued.

This family got robbed by the dealership selling a ~10 year old electric Ford.

What the frick was the point of inserting this pointless sentence? I mean I feel for the family and all, but you could remove this entire sentence and the article doesn't change one bit.

Mercedes ESQ battery replacement cost : $50,000. (Dealer quoted)

Have fun with that in 10 years when it is expected to die . It’ll prob cost even more than that once china and others lock down all the materials
