For example, some people think that a company ought to have the same percentage of workers who are black as the percentage of people in the community who are black. And on and on.

I think more women need to be putting together furniture and mowing lawns.
(And I’ll grant you more men should be cooking meals in the home)

I would like to see more women in the field of fixing garbage disposals, too, and taking out the trash.

It’s funny how most men don’t realize that women are naturally better drivers than them. There was a commercial that used to play a few years ago that highlighted this. Basically, the commercial showed that women are capable of going off ramps and driving along train tracks effortlessly to find shortcuts. You don’t see men doing that.

I think it is reasonable and right thing to do for a company to be made up of people mix that reflect the markets in which they serve (in general and not necessarily precisely).

If knowledge / skills / behaviors are not available in that market for specific demographics for whatever reason, then the company should seek to partner with the community to build them over time.

This is the type of company I want to work for, whether I put myself on either side of people mix (ie, a demographic that is well represented in company or is not well represented in company).

Don’t you think that’s just a little too freakin deep? For Gods sake, just hire the most qualified person for the damn job regardless of race/gender. The feelings crowd are probably the least qualified and typically can’t be counted on anyway, again regardless of race/gender.

You and I run a company that manufactures, markets and distributes tampons targeted to 3 market segments (girls entering puberty, 18-29 yo females, and females entering menopause. We are hiring engineers. Best qualified engineers in our talent pipeline by far and away are males. Per your leadership, that is who we hire.

Our primary competitors take a different approach. They hire qualified people just the same, but they carefully consider the thought mix of the people running the different parts of the company (marketing and product development in particular).

For thought, which stakeholders win in case 1 or case 2?

Customers/consumers
Distribution channels (eg, grocery & drug stores)
Labor
Community workforce
Shareholders

I hear you point that "best candidate" should rule the day (don't disagree with you) but "freakin too deep" is gonna cost you and I dearly in our company.

I think stuff like this shouldn’t bother people and that we should go about our lives being the best we can be controlling what we can control. I personally would not gain or lose anything if women started fixing garbage disposals

Maybe it’s because I’m a man, but I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Most poor communities don't have the labor pool to support industry. That's how you end up losing in business. You need to hire the most talented.

In your scenario, there would be hardly any black players on the Portland trailblazers or on most NBA and NFL teams.

Fairytale world vs. real world. That’s the problem with a lot of progressive solutions, the required pieces do not exist.

Why? Companies, especially private for-profit companies, exist to provide goods and services to people that want to pay for them.
Basically no company tries to serve all aspects of an entire market, and very few function in only a single market.

If a company chooses to “be made up of people mix that reflect the markets in which they serve” then more power to them. But why should that be anyone’s expectation?

Mighty fast quick-draw declaration of subjective “most”, a zoom in to narrow “poor” segment and use of very specialized example (NBA) to take your position.

Next time I’m hiring narrow thinking, please send me your resume. Kidding.

Through the real layers that you skipped over, I see it differently.

We need more female plumbers and lineman (lineperson I guess) to close the wage gap.

How is it out of context?

Unless you have two different standards which I bet is the case.

Typical. You get shown the folly of your statement, and pretend it doesn't apply.

You always have terrible takes on everything, but you're consistent. So you have that going for you, which is nice.

The entire "identity" politics game is so backwards. Its the antithesis of progress.
