Entergy: Two Viable Paths for First Light into The Greater New Orleans Area

Gradual progress anticipated as power begins to be restored
NEW ORLEANS – Just two days after Hurricane Ida delivered a catastrophic blow to Louisiana, Entergy has determined two options to bring first lights into the Greater New Orleans area by late evening Wednesday, Sept. 1.
The Company is working on the following solutions to restore power:
Restoration of certain critical transmission lines that tie the Greater New Orleans region to the larger electric grid – this is the preferred solution; or
Creating an “island” that would temporarily isolate the Greater New Orleans region from the larger electric grid. This stand-alone grid will operate on a limited basis supplied by local generation from the New Orleans Power Station in Eastern New Orleans and Ninemile 6 in Bridge City.
Under either scenario, New Orleans Power Station and Ninemile Power Station will be extremely valuable and important local sources of generation providing power to customers.
Any power to the region will allow the company to begin powering critical infrastructure in the area such as hospitals, nursing homes and first responders in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes, as well as parts of St. Charles and Terrebonne parishes. Restoration will vary by parish and neighborhood based on local transmission and distribution damage.
Customers are urged to adhere to the guidance of their local officials on when to return to the area.
Visit entergy.com/hurricaneida for the latest information.
I can only assume wenare going to get text to vote options for what we want to do

Kind of crazy this wasn't thought through ahead of time. We tend to get a few hurricanes a year in this area, some of them really nasty.
In California, you have seismic construction regs, but we just hang our power from the same towers they use in Delaware or Punksatawney PA.
We couldn't have buried/submerged these cables??? Like NYC or Montreal? We didn't have a backup plan to have an operating local power plant on what is essentially an island?
Whatever. Nola gonna nola.

You can. They’re just really expensive. And someone has to pay for that.

Yeah, yet they haven't made a decision.
The "island," which can't power the whole city, seems like some shite that will cause a mess when we need to turn it off to let entergy take over. It begs the question of why we pay for that on our bills but it's useless.

They did at the Algiers/Chalmette crossing to ensure cruise ship passage.
The text from Entergy today seemed like they were from a boyfriend trying to over compensate for fricking something up.

Agreed. “Just two days after Ida . . . .” You’re a utility company skip that crap and just say what the plan is and by when.

Gosh, Entergy has ONE thing to do in the NOLA metro area for decades and they institutionally get this event this wrong.
Poor planning and poor response.
Other than that, they’ve been great.
The Bell System in it’s hey day wouldn’t have gotten caught this flat-footed.

Looks like someone’s paying for it now

How much profit has Entergy made in the last say, 25 years, with its captive market?

I’m no Entergy or monopoly utility fan, but their margins are regulated and are locked in and slim. Everything beyond that has to be spent on the system.

Define slim in dollar amounts for a monopoly

I don’t have exact figures but I believe it’s in the 8-10% range from what I’ve heard. Someone correct me if that’s incorrect and I’m too lazy to google it. Also, the margins are set by a commission or city council or whoever is tasked with managing them. So going after them is how you get change.

The PSC is in the bag for ENTERGY almost as bad as Donelon is for the insurance industry. Unless and until, a real Governor or strong PSC’s hold ENTERGY’s feet to the fire, we will continue to have substandard transmission & distribution. But our Governor is more concerned about masks, that he and Fauci are both fully aware, are completely useless.

They shouldn't have to rush since Latoya's evacuation edicts and contra-flows got so many out of the city in time, right?

Y’all and wwl have no idea how the grid works. Just because a tower falls down isn’t the sole source of power to the city. Power starts at generating then runs through transmission feeds substations then drops down to distribution. This is a big win because there are enough lines that can energize to feed the power plants to get them running. Every line in New Orleans was out of service due to the storm. There’s several ways to loop power in but unless you verify there are no damages to the transmission lines then you can’t reengergize them . And then when you think you have a viable path you realize several poles are on the ground so it’s now time to find a new path.
This is a big win to start getting lights on in New Orleans tomorrow.
