They are going to start severely downsizing office space next year and making employees reserve desk space on a day to day basis if they have to be on site for some reason.

This is exactly what my firm did when we opened a couple new offices. No assigned desks/offices. If you need to be in the office for the day, you go on our meeting scheduling software and reserve a desk/office for the days you need.

Our Firm HQ will be downsizing as well, since we're on a hybrid schedule now, with many people fully remote.

It's going to save the firm a shite-ton on real estate costs, especially in expensive cities like LA, Boston, DC, NYC, etc.

This is me. Commuting sucks but I actually like being in the office. We have such awesome amenities here.

There's also this profit and loss thing where if the company's bottom line is being affected, changes happen.

Considering this is a thread about the dept of defense, your concern is noted and promptly ignored .

The fact is the people that aren’t productive at home aren’t productive in the office.

Used to feel this way then found a great remote job a year ago and it is heaven. Work just as hard if not harder but enjoy it much more.

Productive people are productive, no matter where they work. Non-productive people are just as non-productive sitting in a cube as opposed to sitting at home.

Exactly. If anything, it is easier to identify now and make appropriate changes.

I hate both sides of this debate

Nobody needs your weekly Dreams Session/Human Capital/thrive/Agility/etc. meeting with middle management or 90% of the bureaucratic consultant-led garbage implemented to do your job in large organizations. It's obnoxious, leads to paralysis and usually trickles down to customers and clients who it will also annoy in some manner.

On the other side, my generation is convinced that work should be about them and their advancement and their future and their goals. Which is likewise pathetic. Do your job where they say to do it or go elsewhere. I know that's the mantra of a lot of this (and right now they have the leverage to do it), but it probably won't stay that way and it will just devolve into bitching and moaning.

we've actually reinstituted work from home because HR says they are losing recruits to companies that allow it.

Louisiana better hope that WFH remains as there is no career incentive for anyone to stay in the state.

These threads crack me up. Work from home has never and never will be an option for me so IDGAF either way but I do enjoy the bickering and whining from both sides of this issue. The differences in generational attitudes is quite enlightening.

Well unless you can put a DSWAN line In your home (you cannot), all secret level work has to be onsite. The CUI/unclassified stuff can be hybrid.
My company is about 35% defense work. That side of the house is definitely not 100% in office.

Yeah how does one even do remote work requiring a Secret or above clearance with unclass internet at home? I’m guessing the majority of people don’t actually do classified work but the contract they work under requires a clearance. If they have to do something that is actually classified they’d have to go into the office. It’s not like you can just have a Zoom meeting about the schematics of the F35 I’m guessing

I do the same amount of work whether I’m in person with a client or Telehealth. Some of my cohort folks are 100% Telehealth at this point.

You’re making the very broad, and likely Boomer, assumption that people who WFH can’t be productive depending on their field.

Not an option for me either so I have no dog in the fight. Watching from the bleachers it looks like our workforce has turned into a bunch of narcissists who place being successful as a distant second on their priority list.

No it isn't. Companies who take this option away are going to struggle to retain talent.
