Electric Cars and Your Home Electric Bill...

Do you have an electric car and charge it at home? If so, how much has your electric bill increased?
I only know one person who owns one. He moved into a new house the same week he bought the car, so he had no idea.
I'm not considering buying one. I'm just curious.

Probably went up less than what Entergy's bullshite fees will be for the next 10 years.

Based on my most recent bill, it would cost roughly $7 to fully charge one of the electric vehicles we have in our fleet at work. That would give around 220 miles of range.

I don’t have one, but have been told to expect about a $350 increase.

It's pretty straightforward to calculate. The car tells you how many kwh it took to charge, multiply by your rate per kwh. For most people it will be in the neighborhood of $50/month.

For now.

My electric bill went down. Alabama power gives discounted rates between the hours of 9pm and 5am if you have an electric car. It's only about a 10% discount. I have my car set to charge during those hours, but I also do my laundry after 9 and usually have the ac cranked down low( this is probably where my cost are getting offset).
I also probably only drive 150 miles a week at the most and that would be on the high side. I only charge every two weeks

Intereting.
If that was a gas engine at 30 mpg, roughly 7 gal of gas - so close to $28 of gas.. but recently more like $14.

Factor in maintenance of an electrical vehicle. Should be higher no?

Maintenance on an electric vehicle is less, usually.

I bought a Tesla in December 2021 and my electric bill has gone up roughly $40/month.
I'm loving it; especially when I think about $200+/month I was paying for gas. Would obviously bee more now.

They are also typically more expensive than gas powered vehicles.

Around $10k more, if you can find one.
I did a search recently and the only new one for sale within 200 miles of Baton Rouge was a Model S for over $110k.
The cheapest was a used 2020 Model 3 with 19k miles on it for $44k.

Was gonna say a few years ago this number was around $4-5 for vehicles will lower range. This sounds accurate.
And a rare agreement with LNCHBOX.
ETA: I'm contemplating a lower end Tesla my next vehicle b/c I commute a few hundred miles a week.

Add 10k + $40-50/month to my electric bill and I'd probably never save any money on gas over the life of the vehicle.

A Tesla 3 costs around $55,000 plus the cost of a home charger, whereas a Honda Civic costs about $25,000.
The difference in price is 12.5 years of fuel at the rate you were driving. Considering that the Civic is probably more efficient than your past car (clearly an assumption), it's more like 14 years worth of fuel.

I remember a couple months ago when posters said the only reason EV passenger cars are ever sold is because of the subsidies
Now the knock against them is they are so in demand that used ones are going for over msrp

But a honda civic is not really comparable to a model 3. A better comparison would be the entry level bmws/audis/benzes

So, not only are EV owners no longer chipping in on road upkeep via gas tax, but they are also being given a cut on electricity usage?
Eventually, that will have to change.

The cost/benefit isn't there yet for electric vehicles. This becomes even more apparent when you factor in what will need to be done to the grid if all vehicles went electric tomorrow.
