Egan’s in Tuscaloosa closing
This was always the place you could find some LSU fans when the tigers were in Tuscaloosa. I’ve been there quite a few nights when they opened at midnight on Sunday night (back when Tuscaloosa was dry on sundays). RIP in peace.

Also, the Unique is probably the worst bar name that I’ve ever heard.

https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/story/news/2021/07/26/egans-bar-closed-tuscaloosa-reopen-unique/5379715001/

quote:

Unique is the moniker new owners Chris Coleman and Mac Maddox have chosen for the venerable venue at the corner of University Boulevard and Red Drew Avenue.

Patrons over 42 years of Egan's Bar saw it as a home-away-from-domicile, one that proudly boasted over its front door "Thick Smoke, Dim Lights and Loud Music." While the old Chukker existed downtown — it closed Halloween 2003 — Egan's was a sort of adjunct open-minded bar, a place that stood out in the midst of student-oriented or themed bars as a grand dive, one beating with a big, warm heart.

Damn :(

RIP to an institution. My FIL has been a regular there since it opened, and I've been a "regular" since I started dating his daughter and traveling up there to visit.

I can’t see it lasting long with a rebrand and name like that.

Was always a great place to hang out at when back in town.

Spent a drunk afternoon there when we got caught in a big downpour before a Bama game. I think it was either Penn State or Florida. My dad and I were walking from the tailgate spot over to the quad and the bottom just fell out. No idea how we made it to the game. Great little dive bar.

I preferred Red Shed, Innisfree, Copper Top and Wilhagen’s back when I would go to T town.

Been there a few times of the years. Went there after Burrow went in dry on the tide. Good times!

I lived in Egan’s from ‘93-‘95…couldn’t beat the DT’s playing on a Saturday night with Cedric and Ian behind the bar! (I drank way too much back in the day )

Maybe the worst I’ve ever heard. There was a place in Birmingham that also replaced an institution that they named Uranus. Not sure which is worse tbh.

kinda makes me gag. How ironic of a name when this new place will be anything but "unique." It is literally replacing one of the few unique places left in Tuscaloosa.

I lived down the street for years. Saw some damn good concerts there, and quite a few very drunken late nights.

This is the way of the world these days. Character is disappearing before our eyes.

Rule of thumb: things labeled UNIQUE, CLASSY, AWESOME, rarely are.

Technically Egan's died 3 years ago when the original owner sold it, but still sad to see it permanently close. Didn't go there much as a student, but learned to love it when I'd go back to visit. Loved the diverse, eclectic crowd that frequented it.
