The East Baton Rouge Metro-Council gave the green light for the old Cortana Mall be rezoned to make way for Amazon’s distribution center.
At Wednesday meeting, there was not much opposition with all, but one council member voting for the measures.
“Everyone is excited about the opportunity, are excited about the job creation opportunities, excited about the revitalization that it will bring to the area” said East Baton Rouge Metro-Council member for District 6, Cleve Dunn.
The vote makes way for the property to be rezoned from Heavy Commercial (C2) and Commercial Alcohol Beverage (bar and lounge) (C-AB-2) to Commercial Warehousing Three (CW3) on property located on Cortana Place, to the east of Airline Highway, north of Florida Boulevard, on the properties known as the Goudchaux Site, Developer’s Site, Wilson’s Site, Mervyn’s Site, Dillard Site, Sears Sie and Tract JC-1 of Cortana Mall.
The company acquired the property paying more than $17-million-dollars saying that the site would become a 2.9 million square foot facility.
“No longer will we be pointing to that space as an eyesore, as blighted property, as disinvestment” said East Baton Rouge’s Mayor-President, Sharon Weston Broome.
Sales are being finalized, the plans are approved, and the re-zoning has been rubber stamped.
Amazon is happening.

It's the EBR Council, the same people who give my tax dollars to the Sterling family to "move things forward". I have every confidence they will somehow manage to frick this up at the last minute.

You would think this would be mentioned in the article, but it is not.

You forgot - pockets are being lined. That is the only to explain how this development is moving at such a pace with no resistance.

It might be that but those jobs are better for a lot of people out there.

Nobody voted against it. The Badvocate reported that Cleve Dunn did not cast a vote. Other less reputable sources simply reported something like 'all but one council member voted for the rezoning'.
The Cortana Mall is in Cleve Dunn's district.

Maybe they’ll reopen Lids and Spencer’s. Get a slice at Mama Brava’s and wash it down with a Cinnabon.

Is there any solid information released on jobs and average salaries? I've seen estimates and other numbers thrown about, but they vary a lot.
This week an article said 1,000 jobs, but a few weeks back the parking lot increased and it was like Oprah was giving away cars.

" The average hourly wage for a Warehouse Associate at companies like Amazon.com in the United States is $15 as of February 26, 2021, but the range typically falls between $13 and $17. Hourly rate can vary widely depending on many important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, the number of years you have spent in your profession."

Glassdoor also lists average at $15 based on 2706 salaries.
"Revisions to the original plans will be filed with the Planning Commission in the weeks to come and will increase the number of parking spaces to 1,750 from 1,250, which suggests the facility will employ as many as 3,500 workers instead of 2,500."
