Where does it lead 'for our own good?' Certainly to 'no good.'

I'm saying that these things have a way of mutating and becoming tools for corruption.
Like the "patriot act"

I'm saying that comparing standing outside of your car and looking in to determine if your door is unlocked, or window cracked, or valuables in plain sight to stealing, illegal breach, and illegal seizure, is bizarre and wreaks of paranoia. There's nothing illegal about it.
People read the article, assumed that meant cops were going to open the door and start rummaging through their stuff, and posted about something that was purely paranoid assumption.
Come on, man.

Hope no one leaves their dog in the car while running into a store

With all the threads documenting the deceit, manipulation and outright lies officers have Been caught red handed using, I'm not trusting proper restraint to be enough of a deterrent.
Back when it was Barney Fife and Andy Griffith, maybe.
Not with swat team tommy and Napoleonic Complex Cade though

So you want to change the current laws on the books, and prohibit cops from standing outside looking inside your vehicle?

Are they going to buy dead batteries? If they set my alarm off, and kill my battery, you can bet I'm suing them.

No. I just don't want a task force that will, rest assured, go around ticketing people for non-moving infractions. This is a money grab under the auspices of public safety, just like checkpoints

I leave my doors unlocked when there is nothing of value in the car. Changing my stereo is less of a headache then getting a new window.

No, I won't rest assured, because it's just not true. That's paranoia. They're not gonna be writing tickets.

Paranoia. You're jumping from cops leaving a note on your door to lock up, to a money grab. It's the same old mentality, jump in the frenzy without reading the article.
I think you, like most others in here, were assuming that the cops were going to go into your car and rummage through your personal stuff. Pointing out that they can do what they say in the article without going in has made you dig in, instead of thinking rationally that maybe you interpreted the article incorrectly.

If it's not to make money then is this really a priority for your tax money?
How many new vehicles even have the little lock things that are visible? neither of mine do

Maybe I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but haven't gov't programs that, in the past, been "for our own good" turned out to be not so much?

No, it's not a priority. But they seem to be having a burglary issue in certain areas and the intent is to try and get people to pay attention and lock up. They get criticized when they do nothing.

No idea. If they are going into people's cars, then I agree it's illegal and shouldn't be done. But my point is that's not stated in the article, and everyone jumped to that conclusion. I don't know exactly what they have planned. But all 3 items can be checked on most cars from the outside. Hardly means they plan on breaking and entering, and stealing your shite, as has been opined in here.

So now you want to do away with all police forces?

If your alarm goes off when someone looks inside your car, i'd suggest a new alarm. No one is opening your door. Your Sentra is safe.

EBRSO hit up our HOA with flyers of trumped up crime rates in our area in the name of safety patrols. The sheriffs asked for a pretty penny to do the patrolling which was passed on in HOA dues. One week of patrolling led to residents getting tickets on their parked cars from the "crime preventing patrolling" methods.

Who wants doughnut icing on their door handles or better yet some nasty car-fapping deputy touching their vehicle for no reason?
