DOTD receives approval for I-10 widening project in Baton Rouge

LINK

The project to reconstruct and widen I-10 in Baton Rouge from LA 415 to Essen Lane has received federal approval.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced Thursday that it received notice that an assessment of the project by the Federal Highway Administration found no significant environmental impact to the area.

“This is a significant accomplishment in moving this much-needed project forward,” said DOTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D. “Past efforts to make these necessary improvements have never reached this stage, and it’s a testament to this administration, the local, state and federal officials, and the hard-working staff of DOTD that we have reached this milestone.”

The Department says it can now move forward with purchasing right-of-way and begin the design process.

In November, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that Kiewit/Boh, a joint venture, has been selected as the contractor for phase one of the I-10 widening project from LA 415 in West Baton Rouge Parish to Essen Lane on I-10 and I-12 in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Phase one of the project is from just west of Washington St. to Essen Lane on I-10 and I-12, which has an estimated construction cost of $716 million.

The change orders from Boh brothers will be in the billions and the delay times will be over 10 years.

Yeah. They are estimating 5 years of construction, so you know the next decade is going to really suck.

But worth it in the end.

There's a couple spots like at the 10/12 merge and the approach to the mississippi river bridge where they're keeping it two lanes. I-10 needs to be three continuous lanes through BR from 415 to Ascension.

This is LITERALLY what they are going to fix.

They are also adding shoulders, updating the lighting, replacing overpasses, and fixing the approach on the west bank.

Which is why the $760 million estimate for this project is absolute bullshite. It's at least 50% higher than that.

no it wont. Part of the plans are to continue two lanes in the south bound direction while creating a alternate exit for Washington Street

Reality, space, a giant bridge limiting you to 3 lanes.

Three cars hit each other and an 18-wheeler burst into flames at the top of the new AND the old bridge in response to the good news.

This will be Baton Rouge's version of the big dig. Except it will be way less complicated and will still take just as long

The newly approved plan is to add a bike lane where I-10 EB goes down to one lane coming off the new bridge.

$716 million for that.
