Do anybody know someone who claims to have retired early, but they really aren't?

I have an old friend from high school who's very active on social media. They love to claim that they retired at 29, but now they spend all their time advertising their services on social media trying to teach people how to raise their credit, business plan, money management skills, investing, and crypto trading stuff.
Not to mention she does freelance graphic design, and does a weekly podcast talking about whatever.

I respect having the skills to make money in a variety of ways. I respect entrepreneurs. But she is still working, unless I'm wrong. She swears shes retired because she left her job she went to school for. But if you have to spend everyday on social media advertising your services in order to get paid, that sounds like work to me.

Ive seen multiple people like this, but just using a particular example. These the type of people who look down on anyone working a traditional 9-5, meanwhile they have no retirement money or insurance.

Rant over. I know I know, dear Facebook.

Have to and want to are two different things, and it sounds like you don't really know shite about them anyway

I too retired. I retired at 24,29,32, and 36. I just get bored. It’s not because I need to feed my kids. Or pay bills. I promise.

Sounds like a conflation between the terms “retirement” and just simply being able to quit your 9-5 job on passive or self-earned income.

They didn't decide to retire, they decided to stop working. We are probably all supporting them now.

My grandfather retired from the state as soon as he could, my grandmother insisted so she could claim they were retired. She closed down the family business, a fried chicken place and he worked manual labor for the next 30 years... He could have done 20 years more with the state and had a CUSHY retirement, hell he surveyed roads and was at the point were he supervised surveyors, he would have had a cush job too. This isn't something new.

I once met a waiter with a name tag that said “jelly”, and your post reminded me of this occurrence.

Thanks Q

Fairly common in industry (if you have a unique specialty) is to bail out as soon as eligible, then contract right back into your same role as a "consultant" .... except you're not responsible for any of the paperwork, and if you want to take a 2 month vacation no one is going to stop you.
