I don't think this is getting settled anytime soon
DIRECT TV FCC complaint
quote:
On Saturday, DIRECTV brought a complaint to the Federal Communications Commission, stating that Disney has failed to negotiate in good faith. Disney has violated the FCC’s good faith mandates by predicating any licensing agreement on DIRECTV’s waiving any legal claims on Disney’s past, current, or future anticompetitive actions, including its ongoing packaging and minimum penetration demands.

That’s what I’m going to respond with next time I’m on a date with a girl and she asks, “so what are looking for outta this?”

It's not Directv's fault. Directv wants to give customers choice of buying 1 of 5 Disney products. Disney saying you'll buy all of it or get none of it. It's Directv now, but other providers will have their day. To hell with Disney.

Too late! I canceled DRT Stream today. I've been with Direct TV since 1997 they outpriced me at one time and they continue these disputes with Disney as we as others. I'm done! YouTube TV!

If this ends up somehow where I can pay ESPN directly for all of their programing without a 3rd party then I am all for it.

I left for cheaper options and I can stream when it’s raining. Not a hard choice now.

Getting an HD antenna solved the ABC problem

Don’t give a shite who’s at fault. I want ESPN so I’ll go with a provider that has it.

I have YouTube TV as well, but ya’ll do realize that they are going to be in the same boat once their contract is due. The issue isn’t DirecTV, it’s Disney. They want to charge so much for their programming that it will force providers to raise your bill out of sight

So Disney bought all the sports, all the channels and all the big IP's up and now they are monopoly doing monopoly things. SHOCKED

Be careful what you wish for.
Disney is trying to launch a joint venture with Fox and Warner/Discovery called Venu. It would be a direct streaming sports package with 14 channels bundled (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, FOX, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS and truTV)… at a cost of $43/month.
They’re currently under a preliminary injunction preventing them from actually launching the service while an antitrust lawsuit plays out.
I’ve read that the carriage fees (what the cable/satellite provider pays) for ESPN are about $10/month per subscriber. But as I understand it, that’s only for ESPN - not SECN, not ESPN-produced ABC content, etc.
Disney has zero intentions of allowing anyone to actually buy ESPN for $10/month. They want everyone to buy like 35 channels bundled together, most of which add very little value for the average individual customer. And then they want you to pay separately for their streaming-only content on top of that.
DirecTV senses (correctly, IMO) that subscribers are sick of paying for shite they don’t watch. My gut says that this dispute will not work out well for them in the long term, but at least they’re trying to fight it.

Yeah, my FIL, age 86, and addicted to DirecTV since before I met my wife 27 years ago, finally said he'd had enough of their fees and the Disney thing was the last straw. Not DirecTV's fault, but he finally went with YouTube TV just yesterday.

This is why I went with Hulu. I figured they will always come to terms before football season starts.

Disney owns Hulu.

I'm getting ABC Monday night football tonight on DirecTV but still no ESPN channels. Not really bothered with it right now since AU sucks so bad at football that I don't want to watch them anyway and I was able to get a $40 credit, a $35/month credit for 24 months, and a $200 gift card after complaining to DirecTV on Friday.

Yes that was my point. All intracompany negotiations will be handled internally and resolved without using sports fans as pawns the first week of football season.
I'm curious how much of a market share Hulu gains each time they have these negotiations?

I’ve been doing the 3 week free trial of YouTubeTV. I think I’ll be making the permanent switch from DirecTV to it. It’s easy to use and easy to install on all of my smart TV’s. Same on my mobile devices. Plus, I won’t have to deal with satellite boxes anymore.

Very upset that this has not been mentioned yet. The OT is distracted by the hurricane.

There has been talk about Apple possibly buying ESPN. If so I needs to happen sooner than later.
