Dear God.

Thirty years ago was 1991. The absolute PEAK of the crime wave.

NYC had ~450 murders in 2020.
In 1991? About 2,200.

The US homicide rate overall was ~10 per 100,000 in 1991.
For 2020? It’ll be ~6.5.

The fearmongerers and their enablers have been QUITE successful.

He isn't the only one saying this....a handful of posters on here come into every thread about crime/shoplifting/murders/etc and remind us "oh come on, go look at the 80s and 90s"

That is not a legitimate line of argumentation when it is the TREND that people care about.

The optics are just terrible when you use this argument. You are telling black parents and hispanic parents and minority store owners not to believe their own eyes, because the "data" you read sitting on your fricking computer in your suburb says those concerned citizens are wrong.

new poll out this morning showing 70% of blacks worried about rising crime, highest of any group.

They aren't worried because of what they read, but because of what they see.

they see stores closing early due to theft. they see prices rising at corner stores because the owners need to make up for stolen goods.

congratulations i guess america, for crime being lower than it was during the absolute worst year for crime in recorded US history.

guess we shouldn't care anymore.

For parents of C students, guess you shouldn't care about getting them to Bs and As because they used to be D and F.

The same people who will tell you that we should be perfectly happy with this are the same ones who will you tell you massive advances on racial/gay/etc. issues over the last 30 years isn't enough and things really aren't better at all and we practically live under apartheid.

So the murder rate is lower than the all time peak during the crack epidemic. That’s the bar?

Crime rates went down in part because of tough on crime laws and politicians.

These days, we have DAs and other officials who refuse to charge people with crimes because racism.

We may not be back at 1991 yet but I would say a good chunk of that is due to police, DAs, and mayors fudging crime statistics to make them look far better than they are.

Emergency rooms are much better equipped and trained in trauma treatment.

This. Paramedics/EMTs are better trained as well. I'd bet the number of people getting shot is close to or even higher than the 90s.

Good point, I wonder how the raw shooting numbers differ.

The year was 1870. Blacks nor women could vote. Do you not see how much progress we’ve made since then Robert?

See how that works

John Pfaff's Tweet is yet another example of why Twitter rots your brain. Anyone who values their critical thinking skills would be best served by avoiding Twitter as much as possible.

The racism of low expectations by the Left is almost approaching war crimes status.

their tactics have gotten old and predictable, so their new schtick is to complain about the OT becoming too political (see Help Board). Which is ironic considering common people bitched for years about politics being forced down our throats into every form of entertainment or media or social media.

parent's corner store went from closing at 10PM to 7-8PM over the past few years.

We sold it, so I'm glad, but I'll be damned if I was caught out there at 10PM anymore.

So in this particular pandemic, we shouldn't take the "if it saves one life" approach?

That's why all the hysteria about covid is ridiculous too. Spanish flu was so much worse 100 years ago.
