Wow. Thanks for sharing that. That’s not at all how I remembered it. I thought Blue Bayou was built and then they added one slide shortly after. Later he moved his Fun Fair Park over.

How do I remember it so precisely but incorrect? I worry myself sometimes.

Yeah never heard of this

I was a seasonal employee at a movie theater for a few years when minimum wage was 5.15 and I got all of it. Plus my 10 cent raise after the first summer

That’s me at the 13 sec mark. I have not seen this video since it aired 37 years ago.
My best friend’s dad (Ronald Carter, also a teacher at Kenilworth), was the GM.

I thought they were only exempt from overtime requirements, but apparently it is minimum wage, too.

I know from experience as a teenager 20ish years ago when minimum wage was $5.15 that Blue Bayou paid $4.15 an hour with $1 per hour "bonus" if you stayed the whole season.

Spoilers:

Management intentionally prevented virtually every single employee from qualifying for the bonus by creating scheduling conflicts.

Blue Bayou is the trashiest business I've ever known from a business management standpoint.

All of this. Worked there in HS to get spending money and went through the same shite. Not that mad about it anymore, it was a HS job that thrived on cheap teen labor for summers, it is what it is. I've never been a patron of the park since working there though and probably never will again.

Their season pass office was a sweatshop.

We only live 5 mins from BB.
When my daughters were little, we’d get season passes, and go Tues, Weds, & Thurs, right at opening (10 am). We’d stay for about three hours and leave. By that time, it would get too busy. We’d also go on Saturday nights if there was a good concert.
You didn’t go to the park on weekends.

Worked Southwinds Water Slide back in the day and made more than that (owned by Haynes).

Fun Times

Also mowed that hill a few times with a damn "hover" mower.

I just realized it’s called Fantasy Water Park in the commercial. It was originally called Fantasea Water Park the first year it was open, but he was sued because there was already a Fantasea WP.

The concessions and games people get paid minimum wage. The lifeguards do not.

It's legal b/c it's a seasonal job. He's been reported 5000 times since 1989.

We were paid $3 an hour in 1991. You got $3.75 if you were a deep water guard. I was just a slide guard.

It had a big ole rock thing in the middle you could walk up and jump off of. Like Waterworld in Houston had. Blue Bayou got rid of it when it re-opened.
