DHS Admits Facial Recognition Photos Were Hacked, Released on Dark Web

Vice warning, though it does have a report from the OIG in there.

quote:

CBP did not adequately safeguard sensitive data on an unencrypted device used during its facial recognition technology pilot,” the report found. “This incident may damage the public’s trust in the Government’s ability to safeguard biometric data and may result in travelers’ reluctance to permit DHS to capture and use their biometrics at U.S. ports of entry

This is why government surveillance is so dangerous.

That’s one of hundreds of reasons why government surveillance is so dangerous.

Facial recognition tech is beyond creepy anyway. Wouldn’t be sad to see it legislated out of existence.

Well that's also true. But many people still support it under the guise of fighting terrorism. Even though it's been shown to be ineffective.

Dumb question but wouldn’t only those that use face recognition software be affected by this? My phone doesn’t have that

This is dealing with border security, not phones. If you cross the border you have no option but participate.

These frickers don't want us having encrypted devices for personal use but will gather our information on a fricking Gameboy.

Not necessarily just the photos but the other data can be useful.

Yup. Which is why they don't want us to have encryption.
