Detectives of the OT - what is this?
Is it a diamond cutter? I paid $20 for it at a garage sale today, just because I thought it was cool

Micrometer of some sort

Imagine it as a c-clamp that knows how far apart its two surfaces are.

Maybe. Boeckeler Instruments makes microtomes which are used to make very small precision cuts. Otherwise I have no idea what you bought. If you can find a serial # google it.

Is there a blade on a slanted surface? If so, it looks like an older model manual microtome for cutting tissue samples to make slides for microscopic evaluation.
