Deductibles explained

I got off the phone with an irate customer today claiming he didn’t owe anything to me. He and his wife have a $500 deductible on their policy.
Daily, I have people claiming this same thing. Their reason being that they were told by their insurance company, “we took the deductible out.”
Yes, they took the deductible out of what their payment was, but people can’t or won’t understand that is their portion of the bill to be paid. I like to think that these are smart people trying to con me. The truth is, there are a lot of dumb people in this world that don’t understand deductibles.
A deductible is the money that you agreed to pay to have your vehicle/body fixed when you signed up for the policy. It works the same for homeowners insurance and medical insurance as well.
So the question is, do these people really believe what they’re sayin? Or is it most likely an attempted con job?

So you are saying they thought that they didn't have to pay the $500?

So, he disputed 500 bucks?
The 500 isn't paid to the body shop

Yes. This is exactly what I’m saying. I hear it daily. Like I said, I want to believe that these people are trying to con me rather than believing they’re truly this dumb.

You’re damn right

Why aren't you simply advising the caller to call their agent

So you’re dealing with people that don’t understand how deductibles work?

Believe me, I wish the insurance would take us out of the deductible collecting business altogether.
It should be:
Customer: “This is Mr. Smith, my policy number is ******, I need to make a claim.”
Adjuster/Claims rep: “I’m sorry to hear that you were involved in an accident, if you’ll pay us your $*** deductible, we’d be more than happy to get your claim started.”
It would damn sure to a long way in cutting down insurance fraud.
Instead, we get the OP or a “can you help me out with my deductible?” “Why yes sir! We’re working with 10-15% profit margins, but I’ll gladly cover your $500 deductible to do your $2000 repair!” Seriously?

Yeah yeah, typo. I know the difference between there, their and they’re. Corrected.

Hold up. You're saying the client pays the deductible direct to the shop. The rest is paid to the shop by the insurer.

Ask yourself this: when you have a $2000 deductible for surgery, who do you pay the deductible to?
Posted on 2/11/21 at 12:48 am to DLauw
It's a pass through. I have to satisfy the DED. To the carrier.
Posted on 2/11/21 at 12:51 am to Sao
To answer you question directly then- yes, your deductible is paid to the body shop.
Posted on 2/11/21 at 12:56 am to DLauw
What you're arguing isn't why DED exists, it's if you are willing to increase your evaluation to include the DED. Then, the client is whole. Yes?

Why it exists isn’t my argument at all, why a client agrees to pay it and doesn’t understand that they have to be pay it is my complaint.
Automotive insurance carriers will, with “persuasion”, pay the entire bill minus the deductible. Unless it’s waived (rarely happens), they will submit payments to your body shop for all repairs, again, minus the deductible.

Are you seeing clients argue with you to inflate the repair cost to cover the DED? That's all I mean. It's an age old tactic.

A good con man has to convince himself first.

Oh yes, I have had plenty of customers ask me to inflate costs to cover deductibles. We have to submit invoices for parts costs and we can’t deviate from database times.
This makes it nearly impossible to cover deductibles. Like I tell my customers, “if you want to save your deductible, what work don’t you want done?”
