I was listening to historians discuss this topic and they really were pretty divided on what the actual outcome was, especially for the first war.

The first Persian war was started because the Greeks were aiding Greek city states in Turkey. Persia was like "frick this shite" and invaded Greece as retaliation. Now all anyone wants to remember is the victory at Marathon, but when you look at the end result of the war, it definitly looks like the Persia s get the best out of it.

From Wikipedia:

Result Persia re-subjugates Thrace and conquers Macedon, Naxos and the other Cycladic Islands. Persian attempts to conquer Athens are unsuccessful.

Now this argument is a little more tricky for the second war but here it is. Persians invaded Greece as revenge for the first war. Despite the invasion failing, they still managed to burn Athens to the ground and caused a huge amount of destruction to the Greek city-states without ever really being put at disadvantage at all despite the defeats

Persia did some damage but they certainly didn't win the war. The last battle was a Greek victory. Persia's goal was to subjugate Greece and that didn't happen.

Replace Persians with British and Athens with Washington, DC and you have The War of 1812

Well if they did burn Athens and caused destruction to several city states I wouldn't call that a failure

For arguments state, consider this? Was Greece better or worse at the end of those wars though. Persia increased its presence/power in the Aegean dramatically, secured its borders. The Greeks fell into years of fighting. Persia Kept Greece out of its sphere of influence for the next 150 years until Alexander conquered them.

Technically you're right. But Macedonia culture and society was heavily influenced by the Greeks.

In 1812 the British burned down the Capital Building. Would you declare them the winner of the war of 1812? I wouldn't.
