I do it every day i fish, typically hit Cal ship channel at 4:15 am heading to the lodge. Navigate barges, LNG tanker, ships and idiots with light bars, even pitch black you can see to navigate.. I rarely run over 35 mph and kill switch is attached, gps & gauges are dimmed to prevent night blindness and my head is on a swivel.
Toon is new and i doubt they were without nav lights.

We used to go out on Cross Lake in Shreveport at night. On the lake, you had plenty of room to see approaching boats (and there never was much traffic at night). Every once in a while, you'd see a fishing boat hauling arse across the lake.
When they were filming the movie "Mad Money," Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes stayed at a big house on the shore of Cross Lake. They also filmed some scenes there. We saw a few people trying to sneak up to catch a glimpse at night.

Not a license.

Do you need to take a boaters safety course to get a Louisiana boating license? You need education if you were born after Jan. 1, 1984, and will be operating a motorboat or PWC over 10 hp in Louisiana.
Has a license number, required if asked with a ticket and fine if not provided.
What else would you call it?

The guy driving the sea fox sunk a boat a few months ago. A smaller center console. And apparently just got this one.

There really is no "wrong side". If you follow the "Rules of the Road", you just indicate you're leaving him on your 2. Which I agree, isn't the "normal" side to pass but it is perfectly acceptable, as long as you indicate your planned maneuver.

Maybe you can, but you can’t protect yourself from what the idiots are doing

Out of respect of the water everyone treats it the same a driving a car. On the right side. Everyone needs to stick to the facts. The guy was on the left tree line driving 54/mph at midnight this is absolutely wrong. We run around between 40-50 during the daylight hours and that is fast on the water.
3 factors go into night riding. Watching navigation if you have it. Watching the tree tops and watching for other boaters on the water.
There is one true fact the sea fox did not see the barge. That 100% had navigational lighting. So that tells me. Someone was driving off the tree tops and or navigation and not watching for other boaters.

Yes, but I wasn't sure if posting his name here was allowed.

Stop saying the boat didn’t have navigational lights on. This is false. It is a 150k barge with a permanent ski rack with a permanent white light marker. Stop trying to create a false narrative
Fwiw most boat lights you have to turn on with a switch. They aren’t like car head lights with an auto mode. I don’t know the case and I’m not arguing they were on and off, simply stating that just because it’s a new boat doesn’t mean lights were on.
If the sea fox was going 40-50mph than holy sheeet. That’s insanely fast at night. Yes guides that run out of places like Venice run the river at night that fast but most have radar and it’s still fast as frick at night.

quote:I agree. I am a conservative operator of a boat. But I follow the rules as I remember told to me by my Dad, his dad was an incensed captain. But I would imagine I screw up. Again I am very careful out there and don’t operate after drinking. But i bet I would learn stuff if I retook the boating course
I am way to the right but there needs to be a licensing requirement to operate a boat. Passing the Rules of the Road test should be a min requirement for license.

The issue here was likely involving speed and alcohol. No boating license will cover that or prevent that issue from
Happening again.
Everyone has a drivers license and people die every day from going to fast and being intoxicated.
