Danville City Councilman set on fire; man in custody

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - Danville City Councilman J. Lee Vogler is being treated in a hospital after being set on fire, and a suspect is in custody.
No word has been released regarding his condition.
Danville Police say Vogler was attacked Wednesday, July 30. Around 11:30 a.m., officers and firefighters were called to the 700 block of Main Street.
Based on witness information, the attacker walked into Vogler’s workplace, confronted him and doused him with a flammable liquid, according to Danville Police. The victim and suspect walked out of the building, where the man set the victim on fire.
The incident did not take place on city property.
The suspect, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29 of Danville, then left the scene, according to police, but was taken into custody after a traffic stop soon after. No information has been released about charges.
Police say the victim and suspect know each other and the attack stems from a personal matter not related to the victim’s position on Danville City Council or any other political affiliation.
