Danny Masterson, the actor best known for his role in That ’70s Show, must stand trial on three counts of rape, a judge said on Friday.
The determination by Charlaine F Olmedo, of the Los Angeles superior county court, came on the fourth day of a preliminary hearing where the prosecution laid out its evidence.
That included dramatic and emotional testimony from three women who took the stand to say that Masterson raped them in 2001 and 2003.
Olmedo said she found the women’s testimony credible for the purposes of a preliminary hearing, where the bar for sufficient evidence is much lower than at trial.
Masterson has denied the charges. His attorney, Thomas Mesereau, said Masterson had consensual sex with the women and that he would prove his client’s innocence. Mesereau declined to comment on the judge’s decision outside court.
quote:

Masterson is a prominent Scientologist, all three women are former Scientologists and the church and its teachings came up constantly during testimony. The judge said she found the women’s explanations credible that church teachings kept them from reporting their accusations to police for years.
The 45-year-old actor has been free on bail since his June arrest. He is charged with three counts of rape by force or fear and could get up to 45 years in prison if convicted. Damn it Hyde

Why would an attorney for the defense say he would prove his client's innocence?
I'm interested to see what he presents that proves anything.

A not guilty verdict will keep him out of jail, but his name will still be toxic in Hollywood, which to a narcissistic celebrity is a fate worse than prison. His only hope of a return to normalcy, and it's a slim one, is complete exoneration.

I have never done a pre-trial interview regarding a criminal matter that I did not state my client maintains his/her innocence and we plan to prove it in court.

You would have to be a moron to state my client maintains their innocence and we plan to show reasonable doubt that they committed the crime(s) they are accused of.

Even that’s not enough these days. Even completely exonerated, he’ll still be outcast and will never land another serious roll in Hollywood.

Not that he has recently anyway.

Waking up sober doesn't mean you got raped.

How can he get a fair trial on allegations almost 20 years old?

In a he said/she said case at that!

The Ranch. And the show was awesome when he was on it. Went downhill after they removed him

If he is proven innocent, I wonder if he has any leverage against the show for removing him?

Never hear of The Ranch, what was it on?

And what leverage would he have against the show? It appears to have something to do with the cult he was involved in since the three accusers were members as well. Maybe he should sue them..

While that’s something we always need to be considerate of in these high profile cases, the Scientology thing throws up some serious red flags for me here. Doesn’t seem at all out of character for that cult to coerce women into unwanted sex with celebrities.

Probably need to sit back and let this one play out without imposing any pre-held opinion of what happened. Accusations from 20 years ago will be difficult to judge either way, so hopefully they’re able to get to the truth of this.

Can you explain to the layperson how these are different?
