CNN) The risk of death from Covid-19 is about 10 times higher in countries where most of the population is overweight, according to a report released Wednesday by the World Obesity Forum.
Researchers found that by the end of 2020, global Covid-19 death rates were more than 10 times higher in countries where more than half the adults are overweight, compared to countries where fewer than half are overweight.
The team examined mortality data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and found that of 2.5 million Covid-19 deaths reported by the end of February, 2.2 million were in countries where more than half the population is overweight.
The report found that every country where less than 40% of the population was overweight had a low Covid-19 death rate of no more than 10 people per 100,000.
But in countries where more than 50% of the population was overweight, the Covid-19 death rate was much higher -- more than 100 per 100,000.
The researchers say that being overweight can also worsen other health issues and viral infections, like H1N1, flu and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.
The World Obesity Forum suggests prioritizing those living with obesity for Covid-19 testing and vaccination.
"An overweight population is an unhealthy population, and a pandemic waiting to happen," the group writes.
In the US, close to three-quarters of the population is either overweight or obese, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This is fake news. The party of science has already told me that fat is healthy.

I remember when I started to gain weight. I was always a bit heavy, but I lifted heavy in HS and I was insanely active. Didn't matter the season, every day I was outside riding my bike, running, hoops, football, etc.
And then life hit and I slowed down a bit. I was up to nearly 250 pounds at 5'7". I went into a physical for a job and I was still in clinically good shape, good labs, BP a bit high for my age, etc. I'll never forget the interaction I had with the doctor of this clinic.
The examination was over and he looked at me and said "I know I'm not your GP, and I know this is a routine physical, but if you don't lose this weight while you can you're going to have serious problems down the road."
It took me a while before I started to get serious about it, but I'll never forget that interaction and I wish to god more doctors would be up front about that. Before that interaction none of the doctors I'd seen had said anything about my weight. I remember when we moved up here to Boise and I was yo-yo-ing and my BP was actually starting to get high (135/90 at one point) I went to the doctor for a checkup fully expecting to hear about my weight, and she said nothing. And it kinda pissed me off. Because I knew that I was killing myself, and for whatever reason, my HEALTH professional said nothing about the fact that I was gonna need BP meds by 30, I was doing serious heart and joint damage, and probably on a road to type 2 diabetes. It definitely made me realize that they aren't going to say shite until you're dying. Maybe they are overworked, or maybe they are terrified of a bad review.
I should be thankful because from there I realized that it's not up to anyone but me. And I'm down to hovering around 175. Just ran 7 miles yesterday at a 9:00 pace and my BP and resting HR are both way down.

Good for you, buddy. That's not an easy thing to do.

I’m not doubting the risk for fatties is greater, but how can you trust America’s Covid #s v. shite hole countries? We’ve counted everything as a Covid death because we incentivized it monetarily. shite hole countries have poor record keeping and probably don’t give a shite enough about Covid to bother testing for it.
Soon as Uncle Joe tells them America is paying them for Covid deaths, they’ll catch up.
It’s all utter bullshite at this point.
Fatties are at a higher risk for everything bad health wise. This isn’t a revelation.

It says Japan and South Korea have low death rates, and Japan is a relatively wealthy country and South Korea was in the news for widespread testing. I wish they had included info on some Western countries besides US and UK though.
You don’t hear much about the blood type theory anymore but from the people i know, the type A’s had more and worse symptoms than the O’s. I wonder what the predominant blood type in the various countries is.
