Could you ever be Brainwashed into a Cult?

I stumbled across a fascinating documentary on HBO Max about a lady named Gwen Shamblin. I have never heard of this story. I had no idea who she was.
In a "nut"shell she was able to brainwash millions of obese Americans into losing weight by joining her religious church. She made millions and became a huge celebrity Joel Osteen type figure in the 90s. Which by the way, I like Joel Osteen. Not knocking him for his following.
Basically, her procedure was to starve yourself and whenever your stomach started growling at you to turn to God and pray and you will lose weight.
She was able to brainwash these people who did in fact lose a lot of weight, but they were basically starving themselves to do so.
Do you think you could ever be brainwashed into something similar to this or WACO, Heaven's Gate, etc?
If you think about it, we are all kind of brainwashed with sports where we are obsessed with our teams winning, players, etc.

There are a lot of churches that could be considered cults. People are too stupid to realize that they money you're tithing every week is going to pay for the head pastor's BMW and million dollar home.
