BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A convicted killer who is supposed to be serving a life sentence for murder, is currently a free man after it was discovered he was never formally sentenced for his crime in Ascension Parish.
Michael LeBlanc, 41, was convicted of second-degree murder in 2017, a conviction that comes with a mandatory life sentence.
Despite LeBlanc being convicted of murder, he was never brought back to court to be formally “sentenced” for that charge in Ascension Parish, The Advocate newspaper reports. Therefore, when he recently finished serving time for an unrelated gun possession charge, he was set free from the Madison Parish Jail, the newspaper reported.
The Advocate reports that the sentencing portion of the murder case has hit a number of delays and continuances since 2017, tied to COVID-19 and the death of his original defense attorney.

Hopefully he receives some swift street justice from the family/friends of whoever he murdered

6-year sentencing delay
How is this possible?

I’m not mad at this.
I don’t think he should walk but if the system is so fricked that he can’t be sentenced in 6 years, then he should be set free.
That’s the judicial systems frick up and i hope the family member of the victim walks away with a nice pay day because of this

That shouldn't matter. Maybe the Sheriff's little computer thinks it matters, but the statute is unambiguous. A judge ought to be able to set this straight.

Blame the DA’s office of Ricky Babin.

what's he got to lose? Just because they fricked up and didn't do the sentencing for the murder and he got out of the other jail for the other charge, he still will have to serve that punishment when sentenced. The problem is he is currently free because of the frick up and he knows it's only a matter of time before that day comes. You put a man on the streets knowing his temporary freedom is soon to end and turn into life in prison, that actually sounds like quite the dangerous situation.

What if that's an intended feature and not a bug?

So this animal was convicted of 2nd degree murder, in which, the only available sentence under the Louisiana statute for 2nd degree murder is life without parole, yet he’s let out of prison after serving less than a decade behind bars over some bullshite admin technicalities?
Unreal Louisiana, unfricking real.

I cba at the moment to look it up in the clerk's system to see what was going on, but this is a bit more odd than an administrative technicality. While post conviction bond is technically legal in all cases except for capital cases, I've literally never seen someone be convicted of 2nd Degree Murder not be held without bond pending sentencing. Assuming that article is accurate (which is always a big if...), him serving six years actually isn't relevant. Had he not been serving that time, it sounds like he would have been released immediately pending sentencing.

God forbid he reverts to his previous habits and hurts someone who you love.

MEDIA RELEASE:
According to Sheriff Bobby Webre, detectives with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office are actively searching for Michael Leblanc, 41, who was convicted of 2nd Degree Murder in relation to the homicide of Adoriji Wilson of Donaldsonville in 2014. Leblanc was arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail where he was incarcerated until 2017, when he was released to a neighboring parish's sheriff’s office with a detainer.
During this investigation, detectives learned that Leblanc was sent to serve time in Catahoula Parish and later Madison Parish, where he was released from Jail in May 2022. Within the Last 24-hours, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office received information that Leblanc was recently seen in Donaldsonville. Leblanc is a violent offender and believed to be dangerous.
“Leblanc’s release is both concerning and frustrating. I’ve had a chance to talk with the victim’s family, who are equally concerned. Our office is actively doing everything we can to get Leblanc off the street.” -Sheriff Webre
Anyone with information that can assist detectives is urged to call the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office anonymously at 225-621-4636 or by texting 847411 to our anonymous tip line from any cellular device or Crime Stoppers at 225-344-STOP (7867).
