Anyone built one of these? It's sort of intriguing. Buy a kit and a used Mustang. Steal parts from Mustang, have driveshaft shortened, drop in a crate engine and paint.

Looks like a cool project, but can one of these be done without having a shop garage, and just using space in a home garage?

I like them. If they are done well, they are nice cars. So many of them are done shitty though.

That's sort of my point. Are they done shitty because the "builder" was in a hurry and got sloppy, or because the "builder" was overwhelmed and unprepared to do it the right way?

LOTS of con artists in the auto restoration business who say they can, but don't have the ability.

I think these will always have a certain "cool" factor because women like them. My wife (pics on Reddit) rolls her eyes at GTOs and 442s and whatnot, but she likes Shelby Cobras a lot. Probably the lack of a roof.

My uncle has actually done one many years ago. I'll text him and see what he says. His looked pretty good though. He has a converted garage though so he does have access to the proper tools.

The people that think a Cobra kit car isn't cool are the ones bragging about dropping a 5.0 in a miata

I have helped friends build two of these and have been to the factory. You can do it in a home garage but will need a moderate to advanced ability with hand tools. It is all laid out and explained in the instructions but if you can’t change your own brake pads or replace an alternator you don’t want to do this. I can’t build an engine but I can do just about anything else to a car. That’s where you want to be.

Well, as a certified old guy, I think their cool, but just asking about whether, as a kit, it's cool in general. I have helped rebuild several cars. I was going to plan to rebuild a vintage Mustang with my son, but he suggested we do this instead, with the idea to spend about $30-$35 grand, sell it and then build another. So, we're talking about a three, maybe four year commitment of spare time.

I meant to add that if you have any questions get on the Factory Five discussion boards and reach out to someone in your area. They will almost 100% meet up with you to show off their car and answer questions. People who build these are rightfully proud of them. But don’t ask to drive it. They never offer. It must be their Fight Club rule or something.

I know of someone with one in Mandeville that just finished it this summer.

A veterinarian I worked for had one done I am a big Cobra fan and his was done very well. Fricking thing was like riding a rocket ship.

I would drive that top car anytime I could.

My prior research discovered that it is a lot cheaper to by a completed cars for less than sourcing the parts yourself

Older guy here...
Look nice but IMO just trying to hard...

Take the money and time and invest in modest classic or buy something new that may become a classic...

You can build a Monster Miata for less, and have air condition.

That's not really the point, though. The point is to build it yourself. Not drive something someone else built.

Some people like kit cars just like some people like to wear fake Rolexs.

Hard Pass for me...

You are better off buying a real classic that will potentially appreciate in value.

A friend of mine built one and it was done very professionally. Pretty cool car, but if you are over 6' you probably wont fit very well in the driver seat.
Not great pic, but the only one I have of it.

I’m buying Caroll Shelby’s personal Cobra in January, so I’m good.
