My buddy is one of the trainers for university of Memphis football and he seems to get along fine 
He admits it’s bad but I imagine if you avoid certain areas you at least increase your odds of this type of thing not happening to you.

This. Don't go to certain areas, and yes, that list of areas increase at nightfall, and you'll be fine. Stay outside the 240 loop, except for the eastern edge of it, don't go near anywhere there is, or used to be, a mall, things like that. Stay away from Orange Mound entirely.
