I had a friend with squirrel problems at his house and he would dispatch them with ease with a 410 and rat shot.
I got a lawn chair, a cooler of beer, and a pellet gun and killed two of them last year.
Problem was, the following week, my wife asked me about a letter we received from the neighborhood association about me in the front yard with a rifle scaring some of the kids on our street.

Borrow a country cat.
My pest control herd have a preference for Chipmunks and one neighbor (about two miles away) hates cats and is overrun with chipmunks and mice. We seldom see either.

I have a colony of chipmunks in my back yard by my water garden. I feed them sunflower seeds when all the maple tree seeds, whirlybirds, are gone. They are entertaining little creatures. They don't like mice, which will come into the house, and will run them off.
I think it's best to work with nature instead of trying to kill everything. I've never known of anyone who successfully killed chipmunks, mice, moles, etc. and kept more from coming right back from other locations.

I really enjoy watching mine; my Friday evenings on the deck generally include a Bourbon and chipmunk watching.
But cats will kill the shite out of some chipmunks.
