Caterpillar Inc. [US:CAT] is decamping to Texas from its longtime Illinois base, the latest major manufacturer to leave Illinois in recent weeks.

The maker of construction and mining equipment said Tuesday that its existing office in Irving, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, would serve as its new global headquarters. Caterpillar said it wasn’t getting any economic or tax incentives related to the headquarters move.

“We believe it’s in the best strategic interest of the company to make this move,” said Caterpillar Chief Executive Jim Umpleby.

The 97-year-old company was based in Peoria, Ill., for decades before shifting its headquarters in 2018 to Deerfield, Ill., a Chicago suburb. Caterpillar said it would begin moving its headquarters to Texas this year.

WSJ (paywall, no poors allowed)

Texas continuing to run up the score on blue states. Should have been The Woodlands, but a nice win nonetheless.

Selling a house in IL now to move to the gulf coast.

Everyone in IL keeps telling me “congrats on escaping Illinois”.

Damn. To put it in perspective, Cat is so big that all the other heavy equipment manufacturers COMBINED don't equal them in size.

As someone who’s had to make countless trips Caterpillar facilities in places like Peoria, Moline, and Morton Illinois over the years, especially in wintertime, I fully 100% support this move.

Now traveling to Tinaja Hills in Arizona, that’s different. I love when they send us there.

As long as you aren’t moving to Louisiana, congrats.

I just hope they're not taking all their liberal arse votes with them. If Texas goes blue, this country is over.

They moved HQ only 5 years ago. They must be tired of Chicago

Only the top executives moved from Peoria to Deerfield about five years ago.

This move to Texas was the worst-kept secret in CAT.

I knew about it a month or so ago from a source inside corporate CAT.

Just hope another blue state company fleeing the high-tax blue states doesn't come to a red state and maintain their voting trends and bring the problem with them!

Cat has provided me a great living for almost 30 years now. I started out fresh off active duty as a warehouse worker, moved up to parts counter in the late 90s, promoted to product support rep in ‘06 then last year promoted to Wear Parts Product Manager over the Alabama-FL panhandle. Started from nothing, making $5.50 an hour to now being responsible for a $20 million per year business. All that thanks to Cat.
