You need reliable transportation. Ideally it would be something you could work on yourself. You have 15k to spend. What do you get?

That was my first answer.

But I got a car guy telling me that all Toyotas are overpriced right now.

I’d get a Ford raptor with large veiny truck nuts on the front and back.

Well, I've already got two, one in black and one in purple and gold.

Ain’t hardly any point buying a used car nowadays. They all seem overpriced to me.

Used car market is terrible now.

Use the 15k toward a new Toyota and finance the rest.

I ain't buying a kid a new car. frick. All. That. Indulging kids is what is wrong with America right now.

And sometimes you have to buy in a high market because you need it.

Well then what does your car guy say to buy? Seems like his word is gospel to you. 15k doesn’t buy much in the quality used car market EXCEPT for a Toyota.

100k+ Miles Toyota. Anything under 100k is absurdly priced at the moment. Maybe find something with a not perfect carfax but you can get info on the accident.

Good luck. I was in the same boat as you last month and in the exact same price range. Ended up buying a car through Carmax, paid $199 to ship it from Kentucky, waited around 20 days for that process but got a nice 2015 low mileage A3 (42k miles). The thing with the A3 is it was loaded to the gills, and we were looking at comparable Honda and Camry price wise which were all stripped down, or super high miles. Carmax prices are usually shite in a regular market, but now you can get a deal compared to local because you can shop nationwide. (When I say “deal” I mean as far as the super high prices you see elsewhere )

Edit: also check Vroom, and Autonation. They were reasonably priced, nationwide as well. Carvana prices were way high.
