Car Repair Etiquette Question

My son’s car (97,000 miles) check engine light came on Tuesday of last week. After trying everything I am capable of doing at home, I ended up taking it in to the shop.
$1200 later, we got it back Friday. I drove it Saturday morning and all was good. Engine light was off. Took it out this morning to put gas in it and the damn light is back on.
Question for the OT. Is there any chance I should have to pay more money to the repair shop to fix the issue that they DID NOT fix the first time. Very pissed off.
ETA: my fault I should’ve put what they said was the issue. They said the thermostat that regulates engine temperature was not functioning so the engine was reading as running too hot. This was $800. They also did an oil system cleanout. $1200 at the end of it.

No one knows what the issue was or what they fixed, so no one can answer this question.

Bring it right back and tell them you paid them to fix the problem and they didn’t.
Now they get to fix it right

Check the gas cap. When filling up, once the pump clicks off, don’t put more gas in to get to an even number.

Black electrical tape over the check engine light should do the trick.

Gas cap may be triggering it
Run by autozone to have the codes run

Chances are they reset the fault light long enough for you to drive off, then fault occurs again. It might just be an O2 sensor

Maybe this is a new problem.

This will be the response at the auto repair place

Why the hell did you pay thousands of dollars to get a light turned off if the car was working fine?

You got bent over a barrel. Buy a code reader

You straight up just got taken for $1200. Live and learn. Go buy a code reader and know what the issue is BEFORE taking it to the shop.

Set the repair shop on fire.

Thinking check Engine light really doesn’t mean anything

Yeah they took you. Always get a car checked at auto zone or buy a code reader. Auto Zone still does it for free I think.

I once drove and put well over 100,000 miles on a Suzuki XL7 that had a check engine light on for most of those miles. Hell, I sold it to a family member who has put another 50k miles on it, and that damn light is still on. It is knocking on the door of 200,000 miles, and that damn light hasn't burned out yet.
