Trying to figure out a problem w/ a boat radio. Here's the problem:

Boat has 2 6.5" speakers in the console. The left speaker works, the right one does not.

The left speaker is set up as the front left and the right speaker was originally set up as front right.

The right speaker was not working about a month ago so I replaced the wire on the right speaker, which made it work for a day. However, it didn't work last time I took the boat out.

Ijust bought new marine speaker wire rewired both speakers today. The left speaker worked and the right one didn't. I then tried setting up the right speaker as the back left speaker. The speaker worked so set it up. Then when I turned up the volume to test the quality, the right speaker went out again.

To test the right speaker, I took the left front speaker wire out of the left speaker and plugged it into the right speaker, the right speaker worked.

What's broken? My stereo? My harness? something else?

why are you not balancing the channels?

Shouldn't you put one on the left and one on the right?

I would think having everything on just the left channel is the issue.

It was originally set up as front left and front right. But then the front right channel wasn't working so I said frick it and used the back left channel for my right speaker. But then that went out too. The only channel that works is front left.

no need to get marine grade for your jeep. The only real difference is corrosion resistance to salt water.

So regular car speakers and stereo would be fine?

I would assume so (at least speakers wise)...but I don't own a jeep.

OP, check to see if the wiring on the back of the speaker itself is good. Sounds like a short there or the stereo is going out all the way.

If the speaker was shorting I think the radio or head unit would be going into protect.

Most likely it's your deck, the internal amps only last a few seasons in a boat. Don't waste your money on a "marine" deck as their special "marine protection" doesn't mean shite in salt water. Get yourself a cheap $100 sony deck that you won't mind replacing in 2 years or so. As for speakers, the "marine" ones hold up much better than ones made for vehicles. They're usually quite a bit more expensive for name brand ones, however, West Marine has their own brand which I've found sound better than the name brand ones. I think you can get a pair for around $100, but it's been a few years since I worked at the marina.

Sounds like your radio may be screwed up.

Neauxla...

Do you use the deck, or do you plug your phone into it and play pandora etc?

Some boat people are just installing an amp, then plugging their phone into it. More power, no head to break.

My deck is going out, and I think that's what I'm going to do. I bought a new "marine" deck last summer... and its already crapping out.

I'm no car stereo guy, but this was discussed on a boating forum and asked about it.

A guy gave me this LINK.

Maybe someone here can explain it to us better.

My guess is your head unit is going out. It's your only/next option to try.

I'm no audio guru, but I've had my share of problems and solved most myself. I'm going with broken head unit. How old is the head unit?
