Can You See the Milky Way from Your Backyard?

Here's what it looks like from mine (well, as seen by my camera after a 2½ minute exposure):
The star, Antares, which I have labeled is one of the largest stars in the Milky Way. If it were placed in our solar system, it would extend almost to Jupiter.

Now that I have moved to North Williamson County, I can see it with my naked eye. But it looks like a cloud, not nearly as nice as that ^

i could where i grew up because there was basically zero light pollution for 100 miles. definitely took that for granted

too much light pollution for me

You're in Granbury? Isn't that where the rumored Jesse James burial is located?

On a clear night on my property in Mississippi I can.

Nah but I can see your wife taking it from 2 bulls at once

So in that picture are we looking toward the center the Milky Way or to the edge or somewhere between?

Yes, but I prefer the salted caramel constellation

When we first moved to where I live in 2000 we could see it fairly well but not as vivid as your pic. It's grown up so much now in my area that the light pollution makes it almost not visible

Nope.
I have seen it once in Bryce Canyon.

That's what local lore says. The legend is that he survived until 1948, and is buried here in Granbury.

It pretty much looks like a cloud here too when viewed by the naked eye. Making a two and half minute exposure with a dslr brings out this image.

That is the Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way. The black hole at the galaxy center would be located at the lower center of that image.

Middle of the ocean on a clear night it looks like a photograph that isn't real. It was unreal to see

Considering my backyard is within the Milky Way I guess technically I can see it from my backyard. And I have noticed that on certain nights, particularly on the weekends, there seem to be a lot of beer cans in my section of the Milky Way.

From my parents second home in MT I’ve seen it look something like that before, but most nights it looks more like a cloud. As long as there’s no clouds in the sky we see shooting stars all night long there though. It’s beautiful. Planning on buying them a telescope for us and their Airbnb tenants to use whenever we’re there.
Don’t ever see anything close to that at home so will probably just leave it there.
