Can you legally sell tap water?
What are the legality issues regarding bottling tap water? Does it have to be FDA approved? Can I just do it or do I need some type of approval?

I'd love to start a small business to help out my family as a second career.

I don't know all the FDA hoopla that goes with it.

If you bottle it to sell it you will have to be licensed. Gay but true.

It does have to go through FDA, but it looks like tap water is even more regulated though.

Best scam I ever saw, I was working at Albertson's and saw a bottle of "diet water"- 16.9 ounce bottle of water, labelled just like that, for the low price of $1.99. I told the Manager on Duty, if anyone ever bought that, to let me know who they were, I had lots of stuff I wanted to sell them...

re: Can you legally sell tap water?
It's filtered/ no added fluoride.
If you're trying to start a company or something though, good luck. It's not exactly an area where you can win over customers by having a 'better product,' and the new brands that do come out probably invest more than a couple 100K for advertisement and product design. It's more brand recognition and what looks pretty on the shelves than anything.

Bottled water is all about one thing. Distribution.

There's not much you can do to differentiate it; other brands are spring water from the Ozarks, the Alps, the Polynesian islands etc. It might be hard to convince folks that water from a Florida sinkhole or Lake Okeechobee is top quality.

Bottling is expensive, design is uber-important, and shelf space is dominated by the soda pop bottlers and beer companies. Payola and shelf royalties are a couple ways the big boys have been successful at keeping mom and pops from gaining traction. The best thing is to make a completely unique beverage and shop it around for acquisition. Look into brewing your own organic Kombucha tea and bottling it into single servings. of course the copyright and legal fees associated make a side business to make a little extra scratch so cash and investment intensive the risk isn't worth it.

One thing I'm looking really seriously into doing is dryer vent cleaning. You can buy all the tools you need for right about $500, and if you don't buy a ladder and only do ground level work you can get into it for under $200. In OKC a dryer vent cleaning takes 20 minutes tops and companies are charging $98-125. A good clean dryer vent reduces energy costs and potential fire hazards, and you don't waste time waiting for your pants to dry because it'll be much more efficient and effective in drying clothes.

Hit me up if you want more info on it, I can help with your branding, marketing, and some legal issues too. Small biz consulting is one of my things.

I used to work for a beverage distribution company a few years ago. They actually owned a huge bottled water facility in Georgia. At the time I worked there they were bottling water for at least 20 or 30 different brands. There were a lot of names you would recognize

I had a buddy who wanted to sell New York tap water, which would be a great idea if legal, cause NYC has very good tap water.

Bottled water for most people is about convenience, not taste or quality. Instead of having to carry around a cup or glass that spills you can take a bottle and throw it around with no recourse.
