Can an orthopedist do anything for a sprained ankle?

Athletic trainer is sending my boy to his parent clinic this morning for x-rays on a sprained ankle…and I’m just wondering what for. Can they even tell if ligaments are damaged with an x-ray? If he has a slight break what would they do, he’s been on crutches for well over a week?
Went to this same place for his separated AC joint and they didn’t do shite…so it seems like if you don’t fall into the ‘you need surgery’ bin you aren’t much good to them. Doubt I’d let them do surgery on my sons ankle anyway…surely not without a second opinion.

Will likely need an MRI to really determine the level of sprain (which is essentially the level of tearing).

THAT question is beyond my abilities, but I assume it is a "that depends" situation. Where is the break? How bad is the break? Etc.

Aight, let me explain something boss.
Trainer is sending your kid to Ortho to simply have his ligaments checked since he's been on crutches a week with little improvement. Almost every Ortho takes Xrays because they are generally cheap with insurance, and can be used to tell insurance that Xrays were negative, so you need an MRI to further diagnosis.

I’d assume this is a PT issue at this point. Reducing the recovery time…and making a full range of motion recovery are the two main focuses…and if a surgeon is involved both of those are shot.

You know you do have the option of taking your child to a dr of your choosing right? That’s the first thing. How old is your boy? Is he the next Joe Burrow or Babe Ruth or something? If not, I would do whatever the dr says. As long as there is no significant break the ankle should heal properly and naturally would be the best thing for him.

I told you two weeks ago you should X-ray because very possibly could be a fracture.

15, he’s solidly a D1 caliber kicker. This is his kicking foot and not the plant.
Hurt it playing soccer. Never had a lower leg injury before.

They wanted the swelling to go down before full diagnosis…so we dunked it ice water for the first week.

Until he's had an x-ray, you can't do anything beyond guess.

Dude. He’s 15. As long as it’s not a significant break best decision for your son would be to let it heal naturally. His body is not fully developed yet is the reason. Listen to what your ortho says to do.

Is he the next Joe Burrow or Babe Ruth or something?

Go to the Ortho. Daughter “sprained” her ankle in a bball game. ER said it was just severe sprain. Went to Ortho and could clearly see multiple fractures in X-ray. Don’t be a tight arse.

I sprained an ankle badly once and ended up finding a chip fracture via xrays that needed 2 screws to repair.

That’s scary. What did they do, cast it?
The swelling has mostly gone down. It’s just super stiff.

I broke my foot a few years ago. ER told me it wasn’t broken and sent me home with crutches. A week later it was still hurting very much so I went to the ortho unit on Bluebonnet. They told me it was indeed broken but that since so much time had gone by there wasn’t much they could do other than tell me to continue to stay off of it. Said the ER at St. Elizabeth in Gonzales should be ashamed of themselves for letting me leave without a boot.

Absolutely....tell ya not to walk on it and charge you $350 for that advice

Went to ER in college for severe sprain and couldn’t put weight on it, throwing up from pain. No fracture. Sent home on crutches. Went to ortho and he immediately noticed ankle mortise was widened due to torn ligament and had surgery to place screws through both bones for 2 months then they were removed.
Tua had surgery on his ankle for bad sprain.
Just depends on extent of ligament damage. I had another bad one, they gave me steroid shot in ankle and PT, took 6 months to heal.

Alabama docs will suggest tightroping it.

Reducing the recovery time
Never a good idea and particularly with ankle sprains.
