Lawmakers in California are hoping to push through controversial legislation that would ban retail staff from stopping thieves stealing from their stores.

Senate Bill 553, which was submitted by State Senator Dave Cortese, has been passed by the State Senate and will now progress to policy committees in the State Assembly. Cortese hopes the proposed law will prevent workplace violence and protect staff from being forced by their employers to step-in during robberies. But some store bosses are furious about the plans, with the California Retailers Association mocking the move as an open invitation for thieves "to come in and steal."

It’s hilarious to me California is a 3rd world nation state essentially at this point. We are going to have to conquer them or replace them with the much more reasonable and successful Nigeria.

Only thing that shitty about Calis absolute fall into madness is Hollywood has mostly chosen GA as it’s replacement and I don’t want them here.

If this passes, anyone that voted for it needs to have the addresses to their homes made public so they can be burglarized.

Wall up the California border NOW. Pretty soon, they’ll start moving here in massive numbers.

Store employees are generally banned by company policy from trying to physically confront shoplifters.

You have cameras, the police are supposed to handle it.

Codify this? Silly.

The state of California and the state Department of Education are being blamed and sued for the failing literacy rate, as families and students believe that they are not receiving a quality education in reading and writing.

Many third world nations are more functional than California.

If you're a store employee, why the hell would you want to stop it anyway? $15/hr isn't worth something happening to you.

Security is a different story though.

If you go to a restaurant in Thailand and eat and run, the waitstaff will unite, chase after you, and beat your arse. The US has become a joke.

I worked retail for years when I was younger. I don't remember a single company I worked for, nor those any I knew worked for, that ever "forced" their employees to attempt to foil robberies. The opposite was true, that employers would urge their employees not to get involved. The desire to avoid lawsuits in the retail industry is massive, to the point where the only job I ever walked out on was in retail management when upper management allowed a shoplifter to get off without charges as long as he gave the merchandise back (this was after a mall cop and I chased the thief, finally wrestling him down in the back of a truck stopped at a nearby red light).

All this bill does is double-down on the insanity of Cali's $950 ceiling on misdemeanor theft (meaning no arrest).

The company doesnt want to pay the medical bills if you get your arse beat.

or

if they pull out a firearm and shoot a customer/your employee.

Between that and $15/hr aint enough to play police, pretty much every company already has this policy in place.

So why make an unnecessary law to stop it? One, Im sure wont gave unintended consequences all the while not actually changing the thing they want to fix.
