With vacations getting completely jacked up this year and no longer having the requirement to go to the office. The wife (no pics) and I are considering getting an rv and just packing up the dogs and going to see the leaves turn colors in the northwest.

I have never owned one before and I'm interested in this boards wisdom.

Looking at a starter class c something below 40k. In your opinion what are the best brands, layouts, etc.

What questions should I ask? TIA

CL is packed with ads from owners. You'll get a better deal there than a lot. Their loan isn't your concern and if they are upside down that's on them. Negotiate.

Question you should ask: “Should I buy it?”
Answer: “Don’t do it.”

I would go over every possible storage space really well.

It’s fairly easy to hide cocaine and weed in an RV

You can finance an RV like a house but they depreciate like cars.

The Ford C Class chassis cabs tend to be more sought after. I can't recommend a diesel any longer with the decreased reliability and costly maintenance of the new emissions systems. The gas V10 is the motor to get.

Even if you buy right it is a losing deal financially. We bought ours 3 years old put 5k down and made payments for 6 years and got out for the note.

If you only want to do this for 3 months of the year you are better off renting. A set of tires for all 6 wheels is $1500-$2000.

Also many people go the travel trailer route as it is cheaper and then you have a vehicle to use at your destination. You can get smaller travel trailers that are towable with a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck. Once you get setup at a campsite your aren't going to want to roll up to go get groceries or dinner out.

Hope this helps.

True. Renting is much more economical. Depreciating asset like a mobile home.

I'm going to pay cash and if we like being on the road we may keep it. Otherwise I'll sell it, and we'll go back to our normal home life.

Just seems like the time is right to do something different and get out and see more of the country.

Just looked into renting 9k from next weekend to Thanksgiving. Might as well buy

Thanks cbr, was looking at the Ford v10

Go visit the used rv lot in Houston called ppl rv for a full day. they will have upwards of 600-700 items available for you to examine Without a salesman tagging along . it is located at the intersection of beltway 8 and 59.

they do have a very comprehensive on line listing. for prework, but as a newbie you really need to try many of them on. Your budget is very reasonable

$228.67 x 41 Nights $9,375
Taxes and Fees $3,223
Total $12,599

I'm looking at rvshare.com. there are cheaper, but between 9k and 13k

I have been RVing for 10 years and I am on my third RV which is a 41' Diesel motorhome. If the size of a Class C is OK with you and you have not done this before I would rent one first to see if you like it or not. A RV will depreciate a lot faster than a car especially Class A or Class C models. You need to also figure in the cost of insurance and how often you will be using it.
