I drove by the large kidney dialysis center in Mansfield, La. today and thought about the fact that a disproportionate number of blacks have diabetes (hence, the resulting need for a large dialysis center in a small, predominantly black town).

Wouldn't it be nice if the diabetes issue received the type of action, concern and publicity as the f'in confederate flag?

An iconic moment?

Hardly.

If some wizard could zap away every confederate flag in the U.S. right now, black life would be exactly the same as it right now - too many with diabetes, too many in jail, too many involved in murder either as the perp or victim, etc.

Note: I don't give a shite about the confederate flag.

That was my first thought. These Millennials and their pussy safety gear. A helmet? Really? You think Jerry Rubin would have climbed a flagpole with a helmet back in the Sixties? I'm shocked she didn't take a selfie when she got to the top.

I agree. That doesn't mean attention to that symbol isn't warranted, though. I happen to agree with Bree and the others who are offended by the presence of the flag. And hell, I'm a white southerner.

the problem is being able to point blame at anyone involved in a marginalized culture

you can't blame the 18 year old who rejected education and committed crimes and is now in jail b/c his mother raised him to be ignorant. you can't blame the mother b/c she got pregnant ant 16 just like her mother, and her mother instilled this bankrupt culture (while her father wasn't there). etc

that's sadly all too typical, but it's a constantly moving target when you discuss the root problems. at some point, there is a person within that culture to blame (or the culture itself). the issue is that since it's "marginalized", the Big Left is programmed to defend and deflect

being offended at words or flags is a sign of weakness, but the Big Left has warped that into a strength

But I'm not sure any of that has undone the socio-economic marginalization the typical black person still experiences in this country.

Why not? There are plenty of successful black people that aren't hindered by their race because they are respectable, work hard, and/or went to school.

The ones that are "marginalized" are that way because they have of their families have done nothing to improve their situations even though they are given a lot of opportunities to do so. It's a culture problem that has nothing to do with white people oppressing them. Until they fix their own issues, it will be like a broken record and never change.

How so?

I'm not saying if someone in a ghetto has a building fall on them they deserve it because they're a bad person...nothing like that.

What I mean is...if someone who is an adult (so not someone too young to be applicable here) and has the mindset that the man is keeping them down, and they leach off the government and have kids as their source of income, and do absolutely nothing ot make life for them or their family any better...typically the bad things in their life are deserved. Late on their rent, cable got shut off, car got impounded, things like that...are typically a direct result of them being just an incredibly shitty human being. Not bad luck.

And guess waht? I imagine you find faaaaaaar more of those shitty circustances happpening to the shitty welfare queens in the ghetto than you do to the black community in places that are actually making something of themselves and doing something with their life.

Well that won't help race relations...rather than moving on and accepting history as the past they would rather dwell on it...they may be educated but that doesn't make them intelligent.

Agree.

that's what 99% of shite can be boiled down to. The problem is that so many people think that they ARE supposed to be handed things, like bree here. How in the hell are white people oppressing her or keeping her down? For frick's sake the president of the nation and leader of the world is black, somehow he made things work. Oh right, becuase he's driven, ambitious, and willing to work for what he wants. While others, like bree, want to have a hashtag made about them.

Then it makes even less sense.

How would the KKK guarding the flag make it a non-hostle environment.

Well it is a multi-level problem. There are individual and societal aspects to these kinds of issues.

Your point is well taken, though. Just because an individual faces societal barriers doesn't justify anti-social behavior.

I disagree that you can't blame him. He is an adult and makes those choices regardless but I do agree it's a culture issue.
