Boy falls to death at Market Street abandoned power plant

What says the OT? Should the property owner be responsible for not securing the plant or is it on the people trespassing?

You know there will be a lawsuit. That being said, this really was a good kid who was about to attend college and is very sad.

quote:

A recent graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School fell 50 feet to his death on Friday while inside the abandoned Market Street Power Plant in the Lower Garden District, according to police.

The coroner's office identified the 18-year-old as Anthony Clawson, who is listed on the school's website as a class of 2022 magna cum laude graduate of the Gentilly high school.

The incident is one of a litany at dilapidated sites in New Orleans that have been deteriorating while waiting for their owners to finance new developments.

It's not clear if the area had any on-site security. According to the New Orleans Police Department, there have been 10 calls for service to the site so far this year for reports of prowlers, suspicious persons and for medical attention.

Walker described her son Monday as “poised” and “intelligent.” He received a full-tuition scholarship to Louisiana State University to study chemistry and was planning to begin school there as a freshman this fall, according to Walker. Clawson also worked as a waiter this summer at Antoine’s, and Walker said she remembers visiting the restaurant recently and heard his coworkers rave about him.

The four teens were leaving the building together just before 9 p.m. when they noticed someone shining a flashlight at them from below, according to Walker. They were scared someone would try to bother them and left a different way than they used to climb up to the building's roof. Clawson was leading the group, testing the boards as he and his friends made their way down to the entrance of the building, Walker said.

Clawson stepped on a board that wasn’t as secure as he’d thought it was, and it collapsed under him, causing him to fall five stories and land at the bottom of the property, his mother explained.

“You don’t think ‘my child is going to plunge to his death in an industrial building’ when he is poised in every way for a great life,” she said.

I mean…you don’t really think that even if they are a shithead.

Assuming they went through some kind of fence, I'd say it should be on the dead person.

That's not how it will play out most likely though. People are rarely responsible for their actions these days.

I was a teen once. We called this "shit, somebody caught us doing something we're not supposed to be doing."

ETA: they probably just found a cool spot to rip a joint. It sounds exactly like something my friends and I would do

Do kids not do this stuff anymore? Used to be pretty normal teen behavior.

If my kid breaks into an abandoned industrial building, I absolutely might think that.

Hate to break it to mom, but those 2 sentences rarely go together.

frick that. You’re going to be hard pressed to find someone who went through high school and college and was never “doing shite they had no business doing”. That doesn’t mean there’s no reason to be upset about this. Hell, a lot of us can think back on things that we did as young people and marvel that we’re still alive.

A curious adventurous youngster snooping around a big abandoned property?

I'm not going to say this isn't one of the risks of doing such a thing, but I'm not going to go so far as to say "the kid got what he deserved!" either. Geesh. Just seems an unfortunate thing that can happen for a kid doing the type of things kids have always done. Hard to say it has any bearing on his "goodness" as a person.

A certain demo is called "boy" in the media even when they're of adult age.

This is a sad situation but is not the fault of anyone but the kid that died.

I have done equally more stupid things on many occasions and thankfully I did not die.

The response should be to morn his loss but not to try and shift blame to someone with deep pockets.
