are they? Explain why without using the less than 5% of the population that is serious athletes or bodybuilders as an example.

quote:

I'm barely 55, and am 6 ft, 250

The CDC calculator says I'm obese

unless you are a bodybuilder or strongman competitor or a former football player that lifts like he did while playomg....than you are not just obese, you are morbidly obese.

quote:

(Yeah, I'm fatter than I should be, but most of my weight is in my giant head. And other giant stuff.)

umm that is a negative ghostrider, you are just severly obese and are in denial due to our society consistently changing what obese is to make sure we dont hurt peoples feelings.

Trust me....you are obese and at your age...you should really do something about that and quickly.

I have a buddy who is 5-10 weighs in the upper 170's and isn't fat at all. He's also not a body builder or serious athlete, he's just in shape and works out a few times a week. But his BMI says he's "overweight".

ETA: He definitely has less fat than me, but I'm considered "normal" by my BMI.

He probably thinks he’ll look sickly thin if he losses 50 pounds.

When people think about “fat acceptance” they think about some 300 pound “model” gracing some magazine cover but it’s also your average person not realizing what’s really obese anymore.

this, all of this

I crack up when i hear a guy say, im 6' and wehen i get to 190 I look like skelator. Its fricking laughable and the amount of fat acceptance is laughable. Yea having a triple chin is better.

I know, I was there. I was 5'9" 243 at one point and everytime i said I was fat, everyone around me said "no way, not even close". it was fat acceptance in every way and I sure as frick wasnt healthy at any size

Its real simple, for 95%+ of the population i.e. any normal person that is not a powerlifter or bodybuilder or strongman and is over the age of 25 or so, if your BMI is over 30...you are obese and need to lift and diet, period.

barely overweight and if he doesnt wokrout than he is skinny fat, especially if over the age of 30.

If he doesnt lift, his bodyfat is prolly in the 20's which is overweight.

its so funny with the whole fat acceptance move....15% bodyfat was considered average for young males in the 60/70/80s. Now that is considered some feat.

Unless you're like 6'6" and taller or a pro athletes, there's no reason to weigh 250+.

Did you even read what you quoted? He does lift, but he's not some body builder or anything.

missed that part, sorry

well then he is fine. He prolly is much closer to his natural genetic muscle limit than almost all average males.

but without a picture its hard to tell.

for example

in the above photo

for males

3-4% would be unhealthy
6-7% would be bordering on unhealthy if in this range for too long

10-12% would be healthy 18-20 bmi
15% would be a healthy weight 21-25 bmi
20% would be slightly overweight 26-27 bmi
25% is overweight bordering on obese 28-29 bmi

30% would be obese 33-34 bmi <--This is OP or maybe even below depending if he lifts weights or not.

35% would be severely obese 37-38 bmi
40% would be morbidly obese 44-45 bmi

for females

10-12% would be severely unhealthy. under 18.5 bmi
15-17% would be bordering on unhealthy and unhealthy for some. about 17-18.5 bmi

20-22% would be healthy low 20 bmi
25% would be healthy but bordering on overweight, 24-25 bmi

30% overweight slightly 27 bmi
35% is overweight 29 bmi
40% is obese 33 bmi
45% is severely obese 38-39 bmi
50% is morbidly obese 45ish BmI, a damn land whale.

Yeah, you'll wrestle around for about 20 seconds until you're exhausted in a defenseless sweat puddle or your heart explodes.

For some reason fat people think they're really strong. I'm 6' 4" 200 and lift or run every day. Yet for some reason, because you eat like shite and lay on your sofa all day, you can whip my arse. Ok, old fat guy.

Which highlights a problem with BMI. Having the same height/weight ranges for male and female (when in reality, it's been a bimodal distribution since the dawn of time).

"Dead center of normal range" for a 5'10" male is BMI 22 or 140 lbs. Underweight kicks in at about 120lbs. The chances that your average 5'10" 175lb overweight male is healthier than your average 5'10" 125lb normal weight male is quite high. (Even through the great depression, the average male wasn't dead-center normal of the BMI range, they were off to the right).
Effectively it's a "Speed Limit" scenario, in the same way we treat the term "Speed Limit" to mean "Speed Target", BMI male ideal actually ends up clustering close to the limit (BMI-22/23/24) instead of (BMI-19/20/21) for guys.

Not a huge problem clinically, your doctor will just look at you and make a judgement (like they do anyway). However medical studies using these exact same groupings get thrown off (often showing little to no risk variation between normal and overweight BMI).

In reality, it's BMI 19 meth addict gamers being lumped into the "normal" category bringing their risk average up, and BMI 25 people who have at least been to the gym once or twice get lumped in with the BMI 29's who definitely need to drop a few, bringing this risk average down.
