Bloomberg: The fall of the Toyota Prius

Prius Sales Are Falling, But Hybrids Are More Popular Than Ever

The Toyota Prius, once revered as the greenest car on the road, has fallen on hard times. Sales are on a six-year losing streak, and now the previously preeminent eco-mobile has fallen behind the Ford Fusion hybrid -- a model its parent company plans to pull the plug on in a couple years.

Monthly sales released Monday provided further evidence of Prius’s slide. Sales dropped 24% in the month, bringing the model’s year-to-date decline to 39%. The automaker attributed the steep drop-off to a manufacturing changeover for an updated version that began in January.
The Prius ceding leadership of the U.S. hybrid market would have been unimaginable in the early part of the century, when Hollywood celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz embraced the little larva-shaped car, and squadrons of them ferried stars to the Oscars. More than 4.4 million have been sold worldwide since the model’s introduction two decades ago.
But sales peaked in the U.S. in 2012, and its descent roughly follows the rise of Tesla Inc.’s sleek fully electric cars including the more mass market Model 3 sedan. “It’s a competitive business,” Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Corp.’s executive vice president for U.S. sales, said in an interview. “There are some people who trade in their Prius for a Model 3 -- I’m well aware of that. But it’s still a very small part of the market.”
The car that invented the segment is at risk for being eclipsed by competitors and compact crossovers.
ETA: Styling and design quality may also be a contributing factor to the sales collapse. This is the latest Prius:

Yeah, competitors that look like normal cars. Not some fugly POS.

Yeah there’s no need for a hybrid only model when any (better looking) model can have a hybrid option. You can only get people to virtue signal with an ugly car for so long.

Somehow the EV products from Ford, Chevy, Nissan, and Tesla don’t seem to pollute as much smug. They are also fully EV’s, so they consume no gasoline at all, unlike the Prius.
Hard to make an argument for a Prius when you can get a RAV4, Camry, or Highlander hybrid from the same company. They all look normal.
And the Prius has become a fleet queen. It and the Camry hybrid has replaced the Crown Vic in most taxi fleets nationwide.

You think? It looked like shite

I’m wondering if they have made the larger hybrids like the Highlander significantly more efficient.
At one point I was looking at a hybrid Accord and found that you only got about an extra 3MPG to go with the extra cost and headache of dealing with a hybrid. Granted that is Honda vs Toyota but the whole deal of a hybrid only being efficient on a compact model held for a long time.

Have you seen a Lexus lately? They look very similar. Prius took their style in this direction years ago, and other cars have done so since. I'll admit the new style was ill-received, but other cars have mimicked the style since.
Lexus, Camry, etc went to this style. They still sell very well.
The Honda Civic looks almost identical to the Prius, and they are everywhere.
I think the style was an issue a few years agi, but that's not the issue now.
And you probably won't find a more reliable hybrid than a Prius. I think something else is holding it back now.
Prius isn't close to being a luxury level car. They sort of feel cheaply made. Maybe that's the problem now. And there are many more viable options for hybrids now.

The ugly appearance was a selling point as it signaled your virtue.
Now hybrids are not unusual so no one cares.

The Prius has definitely been a virtue signaling car since its release. Many an Obama and Eracism sticker has been placed on a Prius.

There was alot of ghey in that post.

Toyota needs to work on the look of their cars IMO. Say what you want about Ford but the Fusion is a much better looking car than the Prius.

There's less demand when gas is down to $2 and standard engines are offering good fuel efficiency. You don't say?

Toyota has recently released the Corolla Hybrid, which looks more like a traditional small sedan with nearly the same mileage as the Prius. Since the Corolla is a new hybrid, I'm believing that it is also eligible for the $7,500 tax credit that the Prius is no longer eligible for.

There is absolutely NOTHING "green" about a hybrid car.
